According to Meet Director Pam Borg, about 35 schools will attend this coming weekend's Premier West/Yreka Invitational. The Boys Varsity competition will be headlined by Klamath Union HS of Oregon that has had a super run of distance stars in recent years, with Lauren Jespersen, one of the nation’s best off a fifth place in the 2001 Foot Locker Western Regional and 12th place in the National Finals, back for this year. Grants Pass was second last year in the Boys contest. Jespersen is the outstanding runner in this coming weekend’s competition, and he added 1:52.87 (800m) and 4:12.85 (1600m) bests this past spring track season, so that part of the year should lead into a super senior season of running for the Oregon star. Klamath should be one of the nation’s top teams this year, with Kevin Pellegrino 10th in the Oregon State 4A Meet as a soph last year, and Alex Jaynes 19th in that competition while still a tenth grader!! Alando Pacaa (South Medford) was 17th individually in the Oregon 4A competition last Fall, and will be tough! Rudy Martinez (Shasta, Redding) was third in the Northern Section Finals and will head local competition for the Oregon visitors. Billy Smith (Yreka) was 5th in the Northern Finals last year, with West Valley of Cottonwood’s Brian Ford (10th) and Tony Keiser (12th) individually in the area Championship run last November.

On the Girls’ side of the competition, the hosts’ Jenny Tyhurst (Yreka) was 8th in the Northern Section Finals of California last year, with her team the defending team champs here. Allysa Wutzke (Central Valley) 10th in the Northern Section Finals last year will be strong. Theresa McCaffney (Ashland, Oregon) was the leader of a team last year that was 13th in the State 4A Fall Cross-Country Championships in that state.
