A fine early season meet on a reduced distance course will start some
of the action “down-south” this weekend. A good group will
cover a campus area course at West Hills High School that will range from
1.6 miles (girls and 9th and 10th boys) to 2.1 miles (11th and 12th boys).
Babey Wagnew (Helix, La Mesa) is one of the State’s top long distance
runners, with a 9:15.51 3200m best from track and a #2 Ranking Statewide
Division II Cross-Country, with Troy Swier (Mar Vista) 9:22.79 for the
8 lap distance and 4:18.31 1600 last year as a tenth grader. Troy is ranked
eighth statewide Division II. The host’s Ross Halleland (West Hills)
was 9:48.51 last spring for 3200m. Rancho Buena Vista (Vista), led by
4:19.83 1600m star Artemio Mateo, is a team worth watching this Fall,
with three others on the team under 10:10 during the spring for 3200m
on the track. Ryan Graddy (Torrey Pines, Encinitas) was 4:29.35 for 1600m
in the spring as a soph, with Garrick Frew (Helix) 4:29.9 last year as
a tenth grader for four laps in track.
Danielle Schuster (Torrey Pines, Encinitas) was 4:54.23 for 1600m in winning
the Section track title, and she is #3 ranked Statewide Division I for
the Fall harrier season. She is one of the State’s absolute bests!!!
Brenna Williams (11:47.33 track 3200) and Julie Coy (11:55.88) were under
12:00 on the track for 3200m in the spring for the strong Torrey Pines
team. Rachel Farrior (Helix - 11:47.9), Randee Meeks (Grossmont, La Mesa
11:47.99 (and 5:17.38 1600m), Bree Justus (Rancho Buena Vista 11:53.83),

8 races by grade. 9 girls, 9 boys

Wide flat starting area that narrows to about 8 meters wide after 200m,
and stays about that wide the rest of the course.
Rolling hills, and quite a few turns. Not as fast a course as you would
think to look at it, Sub 5 min pace is very fast for the boys, sub 6 very
fast for the girls..
All girls races 1.6 miles. 9 & 10 boys races 1.6. 11 & 12 boys
