Granite Bay/ASICS Invitational - Saturday 8/31/02 Preview
Boys:
–Great early season start to action in California has the LA City’s best, Belmont, coming north to face Jesuit (Sacramento), highly ranked Division II Statewide, with a number of fine individuals gracing the action.
Belmont has super tradition in the sport, with the huge LA City power starting the school year with the cupboard seeming relatively bare from last year, but with the program having monstrous depth and the “Little United Nations” (over 50 languages spoken on campus) institution each year having new bodies step up and produce at the Varsity level. Coach Walt Lange at Jesuit seemed to have another super group for the Fall, but undiagnosed health problems to John Wihtol (16:21 at State) that will seriously affect his participation this Fall, slowed the group a bit. Austin Ramos had the equal third fastest time ever in school history on a reduced-length course time-trial, with the almost two minute gap needing to close down if Jesuit is to reach championship heights. Ramos is hot, with Steve Vargas only 23 seconds back in the team trial. CCS power Bellarmine (San Jose) always has super depth, with Grace Davis (Modesto), led by Miguel Uribe (9:22 track 3200) and brother Oscar (#3 ranked individually in section behind Ramos and Miguel, #2 ranked in the Sac Joaquin Section as a team behind Jesuit. Woodcreek (Roseville) has 4:20 1600 star Calvin Glass leading a #3 ranked Sac Joaquin group, with Davis #4 Sac Joaquin ranked, with Del Campo (Fair Oaks) #9 Ranked Statewide Division II #5 in the area listings so far. Chris Hart (DC) is ranked #10 statewide individually Division II!
The Uribe’s and Austin Ramos will keep things hopping up front, with #1 Statewide Div IV ranked Shawn Lawence (Bear River, Grass Valley) and Dan Napieralski (Oakmont, Roseville) 4:18 in track for 1600, adding to the depth.

Girls:
Some bombing individuals will heat up the course here!!! Rachel Bryan (Laguna Creek, Elk Grove) was one of the most improved runners in the nation between the Fall and Spring seasons, racing 10:36 for second at the State Meet for 3200m, with a #2 ranking Statewide Division I in the harrier sport to start the year. She will have competition. Caitlin Chock (Granite Bay) was 10:38 last spring for eight laps in track, with a #3 ranking Statewide Division II this Fall in leading her #1 Ranked in Section overall and #6 Ranked Statewide team!! Clara Viehwig (St. Ignatius, San Francisco) is another who rocketed to the top of the class during the spring, recording a frosh 10:44 3200m, with a #2 Ranking Statewide Division III individually in the preseason!! Wow!!!
Placer, the area Division I Champ last Fall, and Division II (?) In enrollment, has a strong group back for the Fall season, led by Kim Crouch (ranked #5 Sac Joaquin section).
Melissa Garcia (Woodland #3 Sac Joaquin ranked), Natasha LeBeaud (10:57 during track season - State’s #3 frosh behind Viehwig) and 4:56 1600 star (3rd State Meet) Lauren Mulkey (both Folsom), Natalie White (Oak Ridge, El Dorado Hills) #7 ranked Section and 5:04 1600 track, Bethany Gardner (Del Oro, Loomis) #10 ranked Statewide Division III, and Gabi Rios-Sotelo (St. Mary’s, Berkeley) among the state’s top ten Div IV runners, fill out a fine field of individuals!!!
SHOULD BE A SUPER START TO THE FALL!!!
