It appears most everyone is a fan of the television drama "24", featuring lead character Jack Bauer
and his seasonal 24-hour journey to thwart terrorists. Here's Rich Gonzalez -- yes, an avid '24' fan --
keeping you up to date on what's happening in our sport at the California prep level over the last 24 or so hours.

INDOOR TRACK RETURNS TO CALIFORNIA!

After a 2006-2007 winter track and field season with no meets
held within the state’s borders that took place in an indoor facility,
there is hope for the current campaign, with the Monday,
January 21st, 2008 “Run for the Dream” Indoor returning
after an inaugural 2006 competition.
Doug Speck, who has been assisting some of the localized
organizers of the event as they make preparations for the meet's
return, files the following report on the Run For The Dream meet:

Fresno area supporters of the sport put together an all-day
and evening competition two winters ago on the Martin Luther King
holiday weekend, with a rental of the Franken family’s 160-yard
LA-based track facility and move northward to Fresno’s fine
Save Mart center for that competition. The logistics with that
track could not be expected to happen each year, with long-time
famed pole vault official Fred Arnold making a huge donation
towards the purchase of a new track for Fresno in the name of
his recently deceased wife, Madeleine, who assisted in making
the duo the top team in vault officiating during the decades.
The 160 yard all-weather facility will be unveiled in about
a month in Fresno during a competition that will have three portions
to the day’s action. The morning will feature the indoor teams
from Fresno State, Hawaii, Cal Poly, and Cal-State Stanislaus.
Later in the afternoon, high school athletes drawn from across
the state will take the track to compete in the high school
"Dream Team Championships.” The day's events will close
with the Visa Championship Series USA vs. the World.

Fred and Madeleine Arnold - Fresno's super Save Mart Center

The 2006 prep level of the Run for the Dream competition
had a great series of marks in Fresno, with Scott Roth 16-10
(Unattached Granite Bay HS) the #2 US Vault of the Year for
preps, and #4 All Time Californian, and some good tries at a
17-07 Indoor National Record, Jeneba Tarmoh (Unat/Mt. Pleasant HS)
6.89 55m, the =#2 All Time Californian ever, Ashika Charan
(Unat/Claremont HS) Triple Jump 40-11.5, the #1 US prep
mark of the year and #7 All Time Californian, Terry Prentice
(Unat/Diamond Ranch HS) 24-00 Long Jump, #2 in the U.S.
for high schoolers for the year, and Charles Amadi
(Unat/Edison, Fresno) 48-04.5 TJ, the #1 US prep mark
of the year.
The plan for the 2008 Run for the Dream Prep portion
is to have All-Star squads from three areas of the State: 1) Southern,
Los Angeles, and San Diego Sections, 2) Central, Sac Joaquin, and
Northern Sections, and 3) Central Coast, North Coast, San Francisco,
and Oakland Sections, with athletes needing to compete “unattached”
from those areas with no school involvement in their preparation
due to seasonal and sport. restrictions from areas.
Terry Kennedy (Wilson, Long Beach) and Charles Leathers
(North, Riverside) are helping select teams from the South,
Dan McNamara (Bullard, Fresno), Danny Alberty (Edison, Fresno)
are the Central California selectors, and Steve Nelson
(Mt. Pleasant, San Jose) and Lee Webb (Logan, Union City) are
selecting the Northern California squad.
At DyeStatCal we have asssisted them in helping to post some
possible top level entrants
with whom communication is a challenge
during this “out-of-season” time. Through late December, a number
of the state’s top prep track and field stars had committed to the
affair, with the nation’s top prep pole vaulter, Nico Weiler
(Unat/Los Gatos HS) 17-06.25, the possiblity of sub-4:10 1600
stars Brad Suhr (unat/Carlmont HS) and Mac Fleet (unat/University
City, San Diego), and the fine sprint crews competing unattached
from Long Beach Poly and Long Beach Wilson finding themselves
here on the same side, for once.

Photos by Scott Chisam , Mark Smith and Joe Hartman
2008 national vault leader Nico Weiler. 800m star Sebastian Sam,
and long sprinter Jasmine Joseph are set to compete in Fresno.

Dan McNamara of Bullard indicated that the goal this first year
with the new track was to get a competitive activity off the
ground, with it hoped in future years to have competitions that
would feature much larger participation on the numbers side for preps.
Tickets for the January 21st Run for the Dream competition are
currently available currently from Ticketmaster.
Meet information can also be secured at our site, with more
information on entrants as we move closer to meet date.

FEATURED MEETS TO SIGN UP FOR!
We're still nearly 10 weeks aways from the official start of the
CIF track and field season, but meet directors for 15 invitationals
have already begun to publicize their meets and subscribed as
Featured Meets status for the 2008 campaign, with a few more
meets expected to sign on in the days to come!

Chris Drescher, Meet Director of two big Inland Empire affairs!
Chris Drescher at Rancho Verde, Chris Williams at Skyline
and Brad Peters at M.L King appear to be the most anxious for
the new season, making contact early on in efforts to start
publicizing their 2008 affairs. Drescher, who has done a yoeman's
job in bringing a competitive level to the Inland Empire scene,
will be hosting both the Ranche Verde Relays (March 8th) and
the Inland Empire Meet of Champions (April 19th) this year.
The Rancho Verde Relays kicks off the season in swift style,
with perhaps the Southland's fastest improving meet unleashing
a stunning 37 meet records at its 2007 affair as the boy teams
from Vista Murrieta (Large Schools boys) and girls teams from
Great Oak (Large) and Serrano (Small) took home the team titles.
Winning times of 1:02.9 in the boys shuttle hurdles (Vista Murrieta),
42.19 in the boys 4x100 (Rancho Cucamonga) and 46.61 and
3:54.02 in the girls 4x100 and 4x400 (both by Rancho Verde) are
proof that teams come here to scream across the track! Additionally,
hosting such events as the 4x200, 4x800, 4x1600 and shuttle hurdles
allows teams a quality chance to earn qualifying marks in those events
for meets such as Arcadia in mid-April.
Drescher's Inland Empire Championships meet is another doozy,
where the Inland Empire's top programs clash for bragging rights in
a final major meet for most before the CIF postseason calendar rolls
around. Drescher welcomes all competition, but space is limited.
Entries will be handled through EPI Sports. In order to secure a
team spot for either meet, coaches should email Chris Drescher.

Skyline Distance Fiesta meet director Chris Williams
The Skyline Distance Fiesta is slated for Saturday, March 15th
in the Oakland area, with Coach Chris Williams promising a fun
time for all. Formerly the Skyline Distance Scrimmage, the newly
named Fiesta will be contested "under the lights" in the scenic area
of Oakland, with the campus situated near beautiful hillside vistas
overlooking the Bay Area.
Additionally, Williams (a deejay himself in his spare time)
has secured the services of a deejay to play fresh music during the
meet, including taking special requests from athletes and coaches.
Sounds like fun, with the Bay Area and the UC Berkeley campus
both close by. For more details or to sign up, contact Coach
Chris Williams
soon!

King Frosh/Soph Classic meet director John Corona and assistant Brad Peters
King HS coaches John Corona and Brad Peters are very
firm believers that all athletes deserves their day in the sun.
Their staff has taken the extra step of looking out for the "young
ones", putting on the King Frosh/Soph Classic, which this year
is slated for Saturday, April the 5th. Although the venue is
tentative for this year, it does look like the meet might be
contested on an all-weather surface for the first time as compet-
ing on the new facility at Citrus Hill HS is planned.
As noted on the meet's website, "We desire to put
on a "varsity quality" invitational for your frosh soph athletes.
Our meet gives the stage over to the up and comers, and
provides them an opportunity to be treated to a high-class,
well-run meet with all the perks and benefits of varsity-level meets."
Automated timing, computerized results, an all-weather
surface, custom medals, multiple throwing rings and team
trophies are among the features for a meet that could serve
as an excellent reward and mid-season motivational tool
for coaches who wish to spend one weekend giving
extra attention to the youngest -- and duture -- stars of their
program. If you wish to grab a tream slot, be sure to
contact Coach John Corona right away!
If you'd like to advertise your invitational as a DyeStatCal
Featured Meet, contact us before it's too late!
Details on more DyeStatCal Featured Meets coming soon!

SAUGUS GIRLS CELEBRATE AT -- WHERE ELSE? -- A MALL!

From their course record runs at the state meet and CIF-SS
Finals to their sensational second-place finish at the Nike Team
Nationals, Saugus High's girls cross-country team had plenty
to celebrate this season. So... the community decided to throw
them a party!
A large gathering turned out at the Westfield Valencia Town
Center shopping mall (where else would girls want to be?) last
week to honor the swiftest ladies team in state history with a
parade of sorts while the girls displayed some of the championship
"hardware" they earned along the way. These included the
Mt. SAC Invitational grand sweepstakes award, the CIF-State
championship Division I trophy and the Nike goddess statue
that the team earned via its memorable finish at NTN.
The team was cheered on by the Saugus HS band while
touring around the mall and took a parade-like spin on an
antique truck provided by local radio station KHTS.
Pictures from the event can be viewed at the station's
website page for the event.
More photos from the celebration can be viewed at Foothill
League correspondent Don McLean's website by visiting:
http://www.donsdiary.net/modules/xoopsgallery/albums.php
Congratulations to Saugus -- the fastest team in California history!

SEASON-OPENING EAGLE INVITE APPEARS STRONG

Santa Margarita HS (SS) in Orange County will once again host a
selective group of schools for the powerful Eagle Invitational on March 1st,
the first Saturday on the Southern Section calendar. Meet director Dave
Zeitler always makes this an exclusive affair, limiting the number of
teams and basing their selection on their ability to field balanced and
competitive lineups. Participating teams often end up at or near
the top of the Southern Section hierarchy by season's end.
Zeitler has announced seven confirmed teams thus far and awaiting
confirmation on an eighth. The schools that are set include:
Santa Margarita (3rd in D3 boys; 10th in D3 girls), Mater Dei, Edison,
Newport Harbor (7th in D2 girls), Esperanza, St. John Bosco and
Notre Dame of Sherman Oaks (champions in D3 boys; 2nd in D3 girls).
Murrieta Valley has also been invited but has yet to confirm.
Top individuals likely to compete include: Santa Margarita's Jonathan
Telles (4:17.18/1600) and Kelly Collins (14.57 & 44.04 for the HH/LH);
Mater Dei's Louie Gallardo (1:55.96/800m) and Carlo Valdes (165-01/DT);
Edison's Preston Spence (14.99/HH), Ryan Simioni (14-06.00/PV),
Hillary Hayes (4:52.14/1600m) and Meghan Foley (2:10.47, 4:59.18
for 800m/1600m); Newport Harbor's Sophia Ditty (11:18.05/3200m)
and Cassidy Gayner (45.57/300LH); Esperanza's Kyle Grosky (160-03/DT)
and David Cummings (4:25.92/1600m); St. John Bosco's Carlos Martinez
(9:39.10/3200m); and Notre Dame's Thaddeus Brown (11.01s and 21.97w
at 100m/200m) and Charles Maginnis (4:25.00/1600m). Should Murrieta
Valley be added into the fray, add in David McCutcheon (9:26.16/3200m),
Taryn Pastoor (10:58.88 and 5:06.89 for 3200m/1600m) and Amber
Middleton (45.10 and 15.0h for LH/HH).

HOME-BASED VAULT SETUPS NEED APPROVAL

Pole vault reporting specialist Becca Gillespie of polevaultpower.com
would like to remind all of the latest precautions being taken by USA
Track and Field -- the sport's governing body here in the U.S. -- regarding
home-based pole vaulting situations. Clubs with home-based pole vault
facilities need to submit the following:

**  Pictures of the facility
**  Practice hours
**  Who will be supervising (remember that USATF rules now require
anyone who has alone time with the kids to pass a background check)

These items can be emailed to [email protected]  A group
will then review the details for each situation and decide whether or
not the facility is approved. If you are not approved by January 1st,
practices at your home-based facility will no longer be covered
under USATF insurance.
If you have any questions contact Kristina at USA Track and Field
at (317) 713-4665.

BEAT THE HOLIDAY CYCLE - BE AT AN ALL-COMERS!
Before you hit up and perhaps devour more than your share of all
that good holiday cooking in the coming weeks, it might be wise to get
a head start and burn off some of those calories before you add them
on!
What better way to do so than to join with friends and participate
in one of the many all-comers on the winter calendar. Nearly every
weekend has some action scheduled within the Golden State, with
proceeds often benefiting high school programs.
This weekend actually offers up a very abbreviated schedule,
with the aptly named Frostbite All-Comers at Gahr HS in Cerritos (SS)
taking place on Saturday. On the weekend before the New Year's holiday,
Gilroy HS will host its third and final Gilroy HS All-Comers, which
features competition in a wide range of age classifications. Be there!

GREAT NEWS ON THE STATE TRACK FRONT!
With the exceptional depth of talent on the Califonia distance scene
in recent years, it was always a shame to see many of the nation's top
four lappers having to go pretty hard in Friday's state meet prelims just
to qualify, perhaps robbing them of a bit of sharpness for the next day's
finals. Well, the path to the state finals just became a tad bit easier.
Starting with the 2008 track and field season, the CIF-State prelims
will advance twelve (12) athletes to the state 1600m final, rather than the
nine (9) allowed in past years. The qualifying format will be structured
such that the top three placers in each of the two prelims heats will
advance, along with the next six combned fastest times from those two heats.

    Hal Harkness
"There's so much talent in California and we see it go to waste in
prelims in those 1600-meter heats because they can't cruise it without
serious risk of not qualifying," said Hal Harkness, who helps oversee the
state meet for the California Interscholastic Federation. "This gives those
athletes a bit more cushion where they might not have to go quite as
hard in prelims."
In addition to "protecting" some of the nation's best distance runners
via the move, it also allows a few more athletes the chance to experience
the prestige of competing in the state final.

TRACK & FIELD BLESSINGS ON CIF-SS SCENE TOO
A few changes will be implemented at the CIF-SS Divisional Cham-
pionships meet which will directly and positively impact the CIF-SS
Masters Meet. For starters, the good news for field event athletes and
coaches is that the top twelve (12) performers from all divisions
combined at the CIF-SS Finals meet will now advance to Masters
rather than the nine (9) that used to move on.

Additionally, all twelve athletes at the Masters Meet in the
horizontal jumps and the throws will get three trials apiece in the
preliminary round, with the top nine (9) advancing fo three more
attempts in the finals round.
For the tracksters, we've had twelve (12) 3200m runners advance
from CIF-SS Finals to Masters for years, with the section's 1600m
runners enjoying that benefit last year for the first time as well.
For the 2008 season, the two-lappers will get the same treatment.
That's right, the top twelve (12) performers by time at the CIF-SS
Finals meet will advance to the Masters Meet. Three alleys of four
runners per alley will be used for the 800m at Masters.
       Super news all around!

ANOTHER PLUS FROM THE WEST COAST RELAYS
Coach Brian Weaver at Buchanan HS has for years been mulling
the fact that the Central Section has lagged behind the rest of the state
when it comes to being technically astute. A majority of CS track and
field meets do not get reported for days or weeks, and the information
is often incomplete or inaccurate. Meanwhile, the rest of the state often
submits its results to DyeStatCal within hours -- and sometimes even
minutes -- of their conclusion for fans across the state to consume.

Thanks in part to Weaver, the situation may start to change on the
Central Section scene. Already reviving the once-popular West Coast
Relays in the spring of 2007 to bring high-end competition back to the
area, Weaver and Buchanan HS colleague Marty Simpson will host
this year's meet (which initially started in 1927) on Friday, April 4th
at Buchanan HS on their Mondo-surfaced track, featuring Finishlynx
timing. But the new twist we're excited about is that EPI Sports will
now be used as the meet's entry registration service.
       Why's that good news?
Well, most Central Section meets over the years have relied on
hand timing, handwritten results and missing athlete grades. As a result,
Central Section athletes were often shortchanged when it came to
posting State Leaders lists, identifying all-state b y-grade lists, or
previewing top returnees for the coming year. Registering for the
meet via EPI Sports will require coaches to submit athlete grades,
meaning all participating athletes will be given the proper and
accurate exposure they need to college recruiters, media outlets, etc.
Major kudos to Weaver, Simpson and the entire West Coast
Relays staff for their continuing commitment to bring excellence
and awareness of track and field to the Central Section.

WELCOMED WINDS OF CHANGE
More and more meet directors around the state are securing wind gauges
for their invitationals. Perhaps it's the realization that high school coaches
of top athletes in the "wind-affected" events are more likely to choose
meets where their athletes will receive proper recognition for "wind legal"
marks as opposed to those performances being dumped in the "nwi" (no
wind information) or wind-aided lists from meets that do not have gauges.
College coaches agree that they are more apt to contact, view and
study prospective scholarship athletes when those athletes have solid
marks that occur with valid wind readings under their belts. Empirical
research has shown that winds at athletes' backs make differences of
several inches in the horizontal jumps and as much as a few tenths of
a second in the sprints. College coaches are not deterred by athletes
with fine wind-aided marks, but at times are not as convinced when
an athlete's marks do not have wind readings.

If you are hosting a meet -- especially a varsity invitational -- be
sure to secure wind gauges; one for the home straightaway for the dashes
and one for each of the horizontal jumps runways. Be sure to have
volunteers/coaches recording the wind readings for each heat/attempt
and have those readings carried over and printed in the official results.
Everyone benefits, especially the athletes!
Wind gauges such as the one pictured above are priced starting at a
couple of hundred dollars (perhaps what one team pays as an entry fee
into your meet) or on to well over a thousand dollars for the ultrasonic
and remote interfaced models that tie into the timing/results system.

WHERE ARE THEY GOING?

        Mike Kennedy
Our resident girls' track and field expert Mike Kennedy will soon be
releasing his "Where They Are Going" listing, which identifies last year's
top eighth graders
within California and where we have been told they are
attending high school for the 2007-08 academic year. As the most populous
state in America (more than 37 million residents), California is brimming
with top athletes and traditionally leads the nation with the most elite-level
9th-grade track and field stars each spring. We have not yet confirmed the
final destinations for all of these rising stars, so be sure to keep an eye out
for this list early next month and feel free to help us out in accurately
filling out the lists.

CHAMPIONSHIP WEEKEND!
Bragging rights will be up for grabs on the very busy weekend of April 18th and
19th (Friday/Saturday) as regional championship meets will be contested up and
down the state! Among the headliner meets will be the Inland Empire Champion-
ships at Rancho Verde HS and the Orange County Championships at Mission Viejo
HS, both on Saturday.
Championship meets also that weekend in the Southland are the South Bay
Championships, the San Gabriel Valley Championships and the Santa Barbara
County Championships. In the Central Coast area, the highly popular CCS Top 8
meet will be contested while up in Northern California, the unofficial NCS pre-
championship meet will be the Top 8 meet at James Logan HS. Several SJS
powers will likely compete in the popular Woody Wilson Invitational that weekend
as well.

HY-TEK SCHOOL CODES SET FOR 2008 SEASON

The Hy-tek school identification codes for the coming track and field season
have been released. All meet timers/directors are urged to utilize these codes when
producing their automated meet results via Hy-tek Meet Manager.
Coaches are to use these HyTek abbreviations for their schools when submit-
ting their entries through on-line services as well.
Use of these codes will also merge cleanly with the EPI Sports database,
making for ultra-accurate state leader lists.
The school codes for the 2008 track and field seasons are as follows:
