Central Section Jump Star Talks!!
Interview by Doug Speck - DyeStatCal.com

Part of a super group of female triple jumpers who return for the 2007 outdoor season, Taylor Nichols (Stockdale, Bakersfield) joined the 40 foot club earlier in February at the Lee Adams Invitational in Bakersfield, jumping 40-05 to preface what she hopes will be a very special senior year.  One of five back in the state over that magical 40 foot barrier, we had a chance to ask Taylor a few questions a couple of weeks back and her answers are posted below.

1) Briefly summarize your successes in Track and Field over the past few years--

I've increased my distance in the triple jump every year for the past four years at the AAU or USATF Junior Olympics. I've placed 2nd in the triple jump for the past 3 years at the AAU or USATF JO's. My relay team has placed in the top 6 for the past five years in the AAU or USATF JO's. I'm an All American Indoor and Outdoor athlete.

2) What other sports do you do or did you do while you were growing up (any other big school activities - see you are on the cheer roster)?

I started competetive gymnastics at age 5 (thru age 9). I've been competing in track and field since age 9. I played basketball in Junior High, and I've been cheering since Junior High. I'm currently and officer of the Black Student Union at Stockdale High School.

3) How hard have you been working this winter building up to your 40-05 effort this past weekend in Bakersfield?

I've been working with my jump coach Dave Quick and my sprint coach Robert Gridiron to maintain my conditioning. Also, my dad was a professional football player and knows what it takes to accomplish my goals. My dad has been pushing me all the way.

4) What phases of your event are you particularly working on to extend your best distances?

Being consistent on the board, and improving my last (jump) phase.

5) Seems like an event that could be very tough on the body and sure few escape without some injuries along the way--what problems have you had, how did you overcome them, and build strength for the future to not have them bother you (or are you heavily taped before meets or practices?)--

Last year was disappointing because I had some nagging injuries that prevented me from training and competing at the highest level. By working hard and smart I have become a stronger athlete. Being physically stronger prevents future injuries.

6) What are some of your goals this spring and summer?

I plan to jump at least 42 feet and gain a scholarship from a prestigious school.

7) Thoughts on college--aim to stick close to home or open to heading out a distance from Bakersfield?

I would like to stay close to home, but I'm not opposed to going away depending on the institution.

8) What advice would you have for a beginning triple jumper who came out for track for the first time and is new to the three-leap event?

You must make sure that you are physically fit for this event because it requires a lot of strength. Most of all be mentally strong because if you are not, physical strength means nothing. You need the entire package.
