California Coaches Alliance
Meeting of January 11, 2007

Minutes from the meeting!
Agenda - Handouts - Discussion

Wednesday, January 11, 2007
At Roma D'Italia Restaurant in Tustin
Notes by Rich Gonzalez - Editor, DyeStatCal

In what turned out to be a highly successful and enjoyable meeting, more than 40 coaches turned out for the periodic Coaches Alliance gathering to share ideas, receive news and hear updates on "what's going on" in the sports of cross-country and track and field in the Golden State. While many coaches were undoubtedly lured by the free Italian dinner (fine food, we must say, with attendees choosing from one of four available entrees), they stayed around (only two coaches appeared to leave earlier) to hear/create some great discussion.                                  Below are a few of the evening's highlights. Although the following material hits the main topics, you really had to be there to enjoy/learn from the interaction that occurred during the presentations in the 2-1/2 meeting. Coaches are strongly urged to participate in the upcomnig meetings (dates to come), as DyeStatCal will only post highlights from these gatherings. It's better for coaches to experience the meetings in person and be involved! Also, coaches in all sections throughout the state are encouraged to create simialr meetings in their area.

      ** Meeting began at 7:05 p.m.

**Guest Keith Robinson from VS-Athletics, one of the co-sponsors of the evening's dinner/meeting, introduced himself to the coaches and gave a brief summary of the company, reminded of its proximity to schools in the Southland, welcomed coaches to contact them regarding specials and availbility questions for uniforms and equipment for the coming season. Keith also handed out mini-catalogs and a coaches' letter for review.

** Guest Dwight Stones spoke for a few minutes about his upcoming track and field clinic at Trabuco Hills HS. Dwight invited coaches to review the handout pamphlet and encouraged them to inquire if they had any prospectice campers in mind.

** Guest Hal Harkness of the CIF-Southern Section office welcomed the coaches into the new season and updated attendees on the following:

  • The new sector dimensions for the discus do go into effect this year.
  • The CIF-SS Coaches Advisory Committee has voted to expand the number of Masters Meet qualifiers in the 1600m run to 12 runners, matching the setup already in place for the 3200m run. Coaches broke out in applause on that one.
  • In the horizontal jumps at the postseason meets, the flight order will change this year with marks going from worst-to-best, rather than best to worst (those with the best qualifying marks will be in the last flight). This also was done at the recommendation of the CIF-SS Coaches' Advisory Committee.
  • Cerritos College is planning to start laying down its new Mondo surface on the track starting on Wednesday, January 18th. That phase of the project is expected to be completed by early February. They are still working out short-term plans for the location of the disuces ring for this year. Based on his discussions with the Cerritos College crew, Hal said: "Inside the stadium is going to be incredible."

** Coaches then took a short break from the meeting's proceedings to enjoy dinner together.

** Guest Rick Hagin (El Toro HS) shared a proposal to amend the current CIF-SS Association Rule as it pertains to postseason contact by coaches with their athletes. Coach Hagin has been working on this proposal with others for a few months and has made nice inroads in creating an amendment which has a good chance of passing. If it does, coaches would be allowed to coach their athletes for such postseason events as the Nike Team Nationals and FootLocker Nationals. The actual proposal is linked below.

** Guest Rex Hall (Dana Hills HS) shared a proposal to add a third plaque back into the CIF-SS Awards presenations for the sports of track and field and cross-country, citing a few areas of past precedents to support his case as well as pointing out the seeming inequity in the amount of awards distributed from sport to sport. Data in Rex's research is linked below:

** Guest Ken Sayles (Capistrano Valley HS) shared a proposal to amend the process/criteria in which teams can earn at-large berths into the CIF-SS Cross-Country Divisional Preliminaries Meet. Ken provides some background for his rationale in the link below:

** Guest Jim Roldan (EPI Sports) introduced attendees to a brief background on the services and convenience factors associated with using his company for on-line meet entries and related services for both invitationals and league finals. Jim pointed out that leagues (not just the league finals host school) will often have this cost covered as part of the operating budget for the meet. EPI Sports is currently running a League Finals on-line entry process special and League Meet Managers can get more infor by emailing EPI Sports.

** Guest Rich Gonzalez provided a brief recap of the third annual Nike Team Nationals, sharing that the California teams fared quite well (their best year yet) and the success of the inaugural NTN Open Championship races exceeded expectations. NTN Management Committee meets later this month to address areas for improvement, where the qualification/at-large/rankings process will come under review. A hree-hour live webcast for the event drew 80,000 unique users and creating record daily traffic on the DyeStat website. Rich also:

  • reminded coaches of the upcoming AAF Clinics (including one this weekend)
  • informed the group that the Mt. SAC Relays will revert to its traditional schedule this year (limited HS events Friday night, majority of HS events on Saturday, and the professional athletes on Sunday
  • informed the group that a few refinements/improvements will be in place for this year's Arcadia Invitational, with more details to come soon.

** Guest Liam Clemons (Trabuco Hills HS) gave an excellent/informative 25-minute presentation addressing key components to the success of his Division I boys state championship team this season, sharing his philosophies and answering questions from the crowd afterward. A common theme during Liam's presentation was "communication" with his athletes and the importance of instilling "confidence" in his athletes. The outline from his presentation is linked below.
