LB Poly
National Merit Scholar sponsored by Northrop Grumman
In June, The Integrator (weekly Grumman publication)
reported on scholarship winners among the children of Integrated Systems
employees.
Since then,
we learned about one more
National Merit Scholar sponsored by Northrop Grumman Corporation whose
proud parent works for Integrated Systems. National Merit Scholar Chris
Schaal is the son of Leitha Purcell, who works in Process Management,
Integration and Quality in El Segundo, Calif. Chris graduated with
honors from Long Beach Polytechnic High School’s PACE Academy.
In addition to completing the rigorous PACE program, Chris ran all
four years on the cross-country team and nationally ranked track and
field team. He sang in the Chamber chorale and Vocal Jazz 1 ensemble
in the school’s Grammy-winning music program and is traveling
this summer on a choir tour of Europe. A third-generation Eagle Scout,
Chris has a strong commitment to his community and church. This summer,
he will spend a week repairing homes on a Native American reservation
in Nevada as a member of his church youth group; this is his fourth
annual trip. During the school year, he tutored Poly students in math.
Chris will attend the University of Notre Dame in the fall. He has not
decided on his major but will be exploring careers that will blend his
love of science and leadership skills with his interests in community
service.
