BUFFALO CHIPS RUNNING CLUB PRESS RELEASE - JOE HARTMAN

For immediate release

BUFFALO BABES HEAD TO BIG APPLE FOR ELITE NATIONAL RACE

The Buffalo Chips Running Club of Sacramento will send an elite team of six high school distance runners to the ultra-competitive United States Cross Country Championships on February 18th in New York City. It is the fastest series of cross country races in the nation.

At last year’s USA Cross Country Championships in Vancouver, Washington, the “Buffalo Babes” finished second to the Dallas Metroplex Striders in the Junior team division. The Buffalo Babes have won seven national titles over the last four years at the USA Track and Field Junior Olympics for cross country and are trying to earn their first national team title at this event.

The USA Cross Country Championships serve not only as the national championships for elite-level cross country, but they are also the qualifier for the IAAF world meet in Fukuoka, Japan. The top six runners in six different races over the weekend will earn a spot on the U.S. national team and race against such world powerhouses as Kenya and Morocco in April. The distance of the Junior Women’s race will be 6 kilometers (3.7 miles) and the meet will be televised on ESPN-2 at 9:00 pm PT on February 19th.

The races will be held inside the enormous expanse of one of cross country’s shrines: Van Cortlandt Park in the Bronx. The event was scheduled over President’s Day weekend, so the girls will not only get the opportunity to race against the best high schoolers and college freshman in the nation, but they will have an additional day to take advantage of Manhattan sightseeing opportunities, including seeing Times Square and a Broadway show.

This is one of the fastest groups of female distance runners ever assembled in Northern California. The list of runners includes (with high school, prep coach, and college commitment listed) are: Mo Huber (Acalanes H.S., Manny Myers, University of Washington), Cecily Lemmon (Vacaville H.S., Ray Hausler, Brigham Young), Caprice Bradshaw (Fairfield H.S., Dave Monk, New Mexico State), Yasmine White (Arcata H.S., James Washington, Brown University), Katie Voigtlander (Burlingame H.S., Steve O’Brien, UC Santa Barbara) and Maritza Garcia (Riverbank H.S., Jeep Oliveira, uncommitted).

The five seniors on the Buffalo Chips six-girl team are all among the top dozen distance runners by grade in Northern California. Huber and Bradshaw were named to the senior All-State first team while Lemmon and Voigtlander were named second team All-State by Dyestatcal.com. White was a third team senior.

Garcia – the only non-senior on the team – won the California Division 4 state cross country championship three months ago as a junior. Two weeks later, Garcia was the national runner-up at the 2005 cross country Junior Olympics in Providence, Rhode Island in the Young Women’s age group. She recently defeated several collegians in Reno with a 5:13 indoor mile. She was the Modesto Bee’s female runner of the year last fall.

Huber was the California Division 3 state runner-up, finished in the top ten at the state meet three times in her career, and was the 2004 North Coast Section champion. She had the fastest time of all Bay Area runners at the 2005 state cross country meet - the second fastest time in all of Northern California - and was named the Contra Costa Times runner of the year.

Lemmon has finished no worse than fifth in all four Sac-Joaquin Section cross country finals. In 2005, she was the section runner-up and took 12th place at the state meet in Division 2. She was the #3 Buffalo Babe at this meet last year. Lemmon has been on three of the Buffalo Babes Junior Olympic national champions and is two-time USATF cross country All-American. Lemmon is also a four-time first-team selection to the Sacramento Bee All-Metro team.

Bradshaw was a state qualifier at 3200 meters with a personal record of 10:54 and was the AAU National Champion last summer at 3000 meters. She most recently took ninth place at the California state cross country meet in Division 1 with the third fastest time of anyone from the Sac-Joaquin Section. She was named to Sacramento Bee’s All-Metro first team.

Voigtlander was the 2005 runner-up in the Division 3 Central Coast Section where she had the fifth fastest time of the day. She went on to post an 18:45 5k time at the state cross country meet which put her in 15th place in the very competitive Division 3 race, an improvement of over a minute from 2004. She was named to the All-NorCal third team by caltrack.com.

White, still only 16, has already been to Japan with a United States world team. She was the 2004 USA Triathlon Champion in her age group and was second last year thereby earning a trip to the 2005 ITU World Championships in Gamagori, Japan in September. In running, she was the 2005 North Coast Section cross country champion and her highest state finish was fourth place in 2004. She also has a 3200 meter PR of 10:50. White was the #1 Buffalo Babe at this meet last year, 23rd overall.
