Jack Farrell (former
Thousand Oaks HS coach) recovering from serious health situation Back around the first of the month it turns out that former Thousand Oaks HS Coach Jack Farrell had a serious heart incident while in Mammoth with his wife Kathi. After a lengthy morning bike ride, Jack returned home, with Kathi noting that he did not seem or look good at all, and she drove him to a nearby hospital, a great choice, as he went into cardiac arrest a few minutes after arrival and a defibrillator was used to revive him. After another problem an hour later the decision was made to move him to another site, and he ended up in Reno, Nevada at a cardiac care ward. It turns out that a stent that was placed two years ago in Jack's heart had problems and a new one had to be put in "around" the problem area, as the old one could not be removed. Jack is currently doing much better and will be staying with
Roger Patrick in the Conejo area for the next week, and Roger indicated that
people
certainly
could pass
on
cards to Jack there. During a couple decade career at Thousand Oaks HS from the late 1970's through the 1990's Farrell had as much success as any coach in California history with his Cross-Country squads and distance runners in track. Kim Mortensen from TO still holds the National 3200m Record with her amazing 9:48.59 from 1996, with his squads winning Section titles in Cross Country from as early as 1980, with his 1993 squad scored a shockingly low 23 points in the State Finals to win that competition. He has been widely read for his interesting ideas about training, with his openness about sharing characteristic of many of the State's top coaches in recent years that has really helped to raise the level of the sport.
