Day 3 Diary

It was in 2003 that then-senior Daniel Nunn led his team to a magical ride
en route to the CIF-State Division III team title while earning the individual
race title as well. Dan, who is entering his sophomore year at Georgetown
(and loving every minute of it, he tells us) is always quick to commend his
high school coach (Steve Boaz, pointing in photo above) as the best there is.

Day 3 - Wednesday 7/27

The distance guys gathered in the morning for a trot along the river. We had an expansive view of downtown Detroit from our side of the water. Paul and I had to cut our run a bit short as our race is a few days earlier than everybody else's. We ran 30 minutes, while the other fellows ran 50 or so. With nothing to do later that day, some of the distance guys, Linsday and Marie went to the pool where we showed off some of our mad diving skills. Once we got tired of that, we decided to play a quick game of Marco Polo and I was chosen to be "it". After several futile attempts at catching anybody, I decided to cheat and open my eyes. This strategy yielded much better results. ;-)
I had an unexpected surprise in the afternoon. My folks stopped by our suite with a bag full of blueberries (my favorite fruit). A little later that night most of the USA team took the bus over to a nearby mall. I decided to relax in the suite where I devoted a few hours to meditation (??) and Harry Potter (???). John Martinez and Kevin McDermott arrived back first, so I went to dinner with them. After dinner, Kevin called up Marc Davis to see if we could come over and watch some of his running DVD's. The first race we watched was the 1996 Olympics where he won the semifinal heat of the steeple. The second race we watched was the olympic final that same year where he got last and lapped due to a stress fracture in his foot. The last and most exciting race we watched was the Hawaii mile. At that time no one had ever broken 4:00 in the mile, so Nike put a field together of four minute milers in the hopes that they would break the barrier. Marc ended up winning that race with a furious kick over Marcus O'Sullivan. After we watched these videos, we headed back the the suite where the real fun began.
We had decided Tuesday night to perform in the Team USA talent show. However, after procrastinating most of Wednesday we found ourselves trying to figure out what to do about a half an hour before the Talent Show was going to begin. First we decided to dance to a song from a mix of popular Disney soundtracks. We decided on "Under the Sea" from "The Little Mermaid". Somebody suggested we do a little dance in our new USA speed suits. After a few more minutes of confusion, somebody suggested that we do a little strip tease for the entire USA team... enough said. Our performance was very entertaining to everbody and very embarrassing for us.
At the team meeting that night we had a vote on who would be this years team captain. The obvious choice to the distance group was Mark. After a quick vote Mark was announced as this years captain.
