AAF Advanced Level
Coaching Clinic
The annual AAF Advanced Level Track and Field clinic, which will once again be offered free for all coaches and interested adults who would like to attend, will be held this Saturday at Mt. SAC College in Walnut beginning at 7:30 AM for registration, 8:30 AM for introductions and 9:00 AM for the keynote address, which will be delivered by Dr. Gary Green of UCLA focusing on steroid use and how it is affecting our track and field athletes at every level. Once again, this great AAF clinic is free for all coaches and interested adults who would like to attend. Those wishing to attend can register at the door on Saturday; however, it is strongly recommended that you pre-register on line at http://www.aafla.org. A copy of the tentative agenda for this Saturday’s clinic can also be downloaded at the same website. There will be more than 30 different sessions offered Saturday covering all track and field event areas as well as specialty sessions on such topics as use of the Hy-Tek software, building core strength in all your athletes, and identifying and preventing track and field related injuries. In each event area, some of our nation’s top coaches will be presenting. In the sprints, Dr. Ernie Gregoire, former US Olympic Coach and long time coach of American sprint sensation, Angela Williams, will be presenting sessions on “Teaching the Fundamentals of the Sprint Start” and “The Sprint: The Drive Phase”. In the hurdles, former Olympic medalist, Mark Crear, and formerly top ten ranked hurdler, Gayle Watkins, will be delivering four one hour sessions. In the distances, Bob Larsen, former great coach at UCLA and current coach of Olympic silver medalist, Meb Keflezighi, will be speaking in the afternoon on “Preparing for a Major Championship” and “The Importance of Specialized Training for Distance Runners.” In the morning, Ken Reeves of Ventura will be speaking on “Transitioning from Track to Cross Country and Cross Country To Track”, and Tom Kloos, coach of El Camino High School and one of America’s top steeplechasers, will be doing a special session on “How to Introduce the Steeplechase to High School Athletes”. In the pole vault, Greg Hull, co-national coach for USATF Pole Vault and coach of 2000 Olympic men’s champion, Nick Hysong, will be speaking in the afternoon on “Technical Analysis of Elite Vaulters” and “Coaching and Training Elite Vaulters”. There will be four high jump sessions featuring the author of the Flop Book and world renown expert, John Tansley, and outstanding coach at all levels from age group to elite, Mo Haneef. In the throws, two outstanding young coaches, Brian Gilbert of Mt. SAC and Chris Barboza, head coach at Paramount High School, will be presenting sessions on "Advanced Video Analysis For the Throws", “Olympic Lifting For Throwers”, “Introducing the Hammer to High School Throwers”, and “Advanced Drills For Success in the Shot and Discus”. World Cup Champion, Larry Myricks will be presenting two sessions on the long jump, and University of Redlands coach, Mike Erb, will be presenting a session on the triple jump. In addition to all of the above sessions, there will be two one hour sessions devoted to “Beginning” and “Intermediate” use of the Hy-tek meet management software program presented by Don Chadez. These two sessions will be offered in the morning and then repeated in the afternoon. Developing core strength in track athletes is now being strongly advocated for all events, and Mike Erb, a former decathlete and now head coach at the University of Redlands, will be leading a one hour field demonstration showing many drills you can do with your team to develop that core strength—that session will be repeated once more later in the day. And, finally, Dr, Paul Copesky will be leading four hands-on sessions
on “The Most Common Running-related Problems-- Plantar Fasciitis,
Achilles Tendonitis and Shin Splints- Injury Treatment/Prevention &
Performance Enhancement-Parts I and 2” and If you have any questions, you may contact Tim O’Rourke via e-mail [email protected] or call 626-258-5330 or Jacqueline Hansen via e-mail [email protected] or call (323) 730-4618. TENTATIVE AGENDA Tentative 2005 AAF Hot Topics Advanced
