Coach Mike Erb on his young charge!

(one of the surprising results from the US Junior Nationals recently in Carson was the win of University of Redlands frosh Corey White in the Javelin.  With the event obviously one we do not throw in California, we asked Coach Mike Erb for some background on the development of the former San Jose area prep into a national "under-20" age champion.  Interesting story with it seems some real potential down the road in the spear event! - Doug Speck)

Corey came to us as a solid discus thrower out of high school, I think he placed around 7th at the state meet throwing about 178 his senior year. The plan early on was to concentrate on the discus, but he looked like he had some javelin potential. We knew he had a great arm – he can throw a football 70+ yards – and even though it took a little while for the technique to come around, he was throwing 160+ from day one. At our first SCIAC meet, he won throwing a big pr of 188’ and we knew then he was really on to something, and his potential was pretty significant. He struggled for a few weeks, but had another big throw at the SCIAC championships, 199 and change, winning the meet. The big ones were still to come, 214-10 at the Claremont Classic, and then huge 221-4 this past weekend.

We broke down some of his film pretty closely at the high performance center after the meet, and realized just how ugly that throw was. It’s a testament to his athleticism that he can put the javelin out so far but be so green in his technique, after all, he picked up a javelin for the first time less than 6 months ago. Now that we know he’ll be a javelin thrower first, we’ll be able to change his training and work on it from day one next season. Once we correct a few of his major flaws, you’re going to see way more from this kid. In my opinion, he’s got unbelievable potential, and could be in the 230-240 range before it’s all said and done.

Its fun to watch him get all of this success, as none of us had any idea it would be this way. I can’t tell you how proud we all are that he’ll be representing the United States in a few weeks. He’s a great kid – keep your eye on him.
