Jordan Hasay
San Luis Distance Club
JO Star talks to Joe Hartman

DyeStatCal: Yesterday, Jordan, you set a new American record in the 3000m at 9:37.24. Congratulations and tell us a little bit about your race went.

Jordan: Thanks, yeah, I did pretty good. I usually go our really fast the first lap but I tried to keep it down…I did a 69. And then I had my splits memorized and I was trying to do a 9:47 - but it ended up being a 9:37.

DyeStatCal: So you kinda blew it then?

Jordan: Yeah (laughs). But then at the mile I was 4:59 (planning on 5:05), and I just felt good and kept an even pace and I went for it.

DyeStatCal: So what are your plans for the rest of the summer?

Jordan: Well, I’ll come up here and qualify and probably take it easy so I can peak at Nationals.

DyeStatCal: So you’ll be Division 5 next fall (Mission Prep HS). Are you looking forward to running high school?

Jordan: Yeah! I can finally enter and not worry about eligibility.

DyeStatCal: How hard has it been to know about some of these high school meets with ladies you know you can run with, but can’t go to?

Jordan: It’s really hard. Earlier this year I wanted to enter the Simplot Games (Idaho in February) and I was all excited for that but I found out I couldn’t so that was a bummer.

DyeStatCal: The Golden West Invitational (Folsom, CA, Girls Mile, 5th place, 4:56.38) was an opportunity to run against some of the nation’s elite runners that were three or four years older than you. You were outstanding in that race with a lot of guts in the tough stretches. Jordan: Thank you! DyeStatCal: Can you run us through that race because you were outstanding all the way through?

Jordan: Thank you! I knew that if I let them lead, I wouldn’t win or do my best because I don’t have a kick at the end because I’m not that strong yet, so I decided to go out fast and lead for some of the race just to have fun and then do my best at the end.

DyeStatCal: Speaking of strength, about your training, we understand you do some sand running and some swimming. Your strength must be coming along. Can you give us some insight into your training?

Jordan: Well I swim like three to four times a week, like intervals, 400 yards and stuff. It helps my speed. I enter some swim meets on my free weekends. Tuedays and Thursdays with Coach Jim, we do some speed work on the track.

DyeStatCal: Besides hard training and great coaching, did any of this ability come from your family?

Jordan: My dad, he played basketball in high school and he played baseball and he almost made it into Major League Baseball (Jordan wasn’t sure what farm system) and my mom was a major swimmer in England.
