Golden West Expands for 2005 - Standards-based entries
Interested in continuing your season??

The Golden West Invitational has taken a big step in 2005, with an expansion of its single-day affair to two sessions. One session will be open to the athletes who meet a time or mark standard in their event, with the evening, Invitational portion open to the top, elite level prep athletes in the nation. The meet date should provide super competition in a championship setting with each year many of the top athletes from across the nation attending for the Invitational session. For an "underclass" athlete who can meet the time standard it is an excellent "maturing" experience in the Track & Field career of a young star, with the travel and national level competition part of the "toughening" that creates an eventual senior year athlete who can comfortably compete against the best the sport can offer. For seniors, it would provide an excellent close to their prep careers in the sport!!

With it that time of year when some very good athletes have their seasons ended for one reason or another (sometimes in a frustrating manner, leaving coach/athlete with the feeling there is "something still in the tank."), the GWI is a great chance for close-by super level competition. With the NCAA meet in Sacramento also the same June 11-12 weekend, it could be a great viewing and competitive experience for anyone wishing to attend!!

What are the time and field event mark standards for the competition?

46 th Annual adidas Golden West Invitational Entry Standards - If the evening portion of the meet is not filled by A standard athletes, the top B standard athletes will be used to fill the field. The remainder of B standard athletes will be competing in the afternoon portion of the meet.

All marks are subject to verification. 100m, 200m, 400m, 110H, 100H, marks are based on fully automatic timing (FAT).Marks submitted that are not FAT timed will not be accepted. Also, no wind aided marks will be accepted. Hammer and Javelin may be thrown on Saturday, June 11.

A Standards = guaranteed entry into the evening meet. Note: GWI defending Champions will automatically be included in the evening meet. B Standards = guaranteed entry into the meet; see below for additional information. All athletes must enter by June 5, 2005.

Interview with John Mansoor - Pacific Association USATF about the Golden West Invitational

1) Describe a bit the history of the GWI and the changeover in ownership--
The GWI was founded by the Golden West Association, a not-for-profit group of high school enthusiasts who loved Track & Field, 46 years ago. They have conducted the meet for the past 45 years as a labor of love. The Pacific Association of USA Track & Field (PAUSATF) is the Regional branch for the governing body, also a not-for-profit organization whose members are 99% volunteers and love the sport as well. PAUSATF, whose mission is to help develop our Olympic athletes, is very excited to be taking over this meet and continue the great tradition the GWI has established.

2) Previously the meet attempted had a "finals only" one race or field event competition philosophy.  Ideas behind the changeover to "afternoon" and "evening" sessions?
Under the previous format, only 250 of the Nation's finest athletes could compete in the meet which meant we had to turn away many others. We felt that it would be in the best interests of the athletes to expand the format and allow more to take part. With Sacramento hosting the NCAA Championships for the next three years, we also felt it was a great opportunity for high school athletes to come and see that meet, then show their stuff to the best college coaches in the country. It should be noted that the evening session is still a finals only format with no heats. The afternoon session will have trials in the short sprints and hurdle races leading to a final.

3) How many would be your ideal number per event, and when you do you think you will come out with some standards for entry?
We are shooting for 30 athletes per event. Entry standards are now out and posted on our website at GoldenWestInvitational.org.

4) Why the date placement of the meet during the season where it will be?
The GWI has been on the second weekend in June for 45 years. It follows the California State meet. It is on Sunday this year to allow everyone to watch the NCAA Championships.

5) Background to Folsom HS Facility where it is planning to be held?
Folsom High School is located on the East end of Sacramento, 10 miles from Sacramento State University. It has a new stadium that seats 5000 with a new 10 lane track. There are five hotels located within two miles of the stadium and which will be devoted to this meet. Most of the other hotels in Sacramento will be booked for the NCAA meet and two other conventions in town that weekend. Folsom has a fine Track tradition of its own with past state meet winner Jamie Witt, 2nd 1600 last year Lauren Mulkey (who began her career at Folsom High) and currently Natasha  LeBeaud. It is a very active community that welcomes the opportunity to host this meet.

6) Why do you think Sacramento has kind of become America's outdoors "track headquarters?" (and how can the GWI add to that?)
The Sacramento area is fortunate to have many outstanding track coaches and facilities who love the sport. These folks have worked over the years staring with the GWI in 1961, the first Outdoor Championship in 1968 (The night of speed!) leading to the Trials in 2000 and 2004, and the 2003 NCAA Championships to create a rich tradition in Track & Field. Combine this with an active Sports Commission who has recognized the asset they have in Track & Field and has brought the resources to make things happen. Combined, Sacramento has hosted and will continue to host the best Track & Field athletes at every level with Junior Olympics, High School, College and Olympic athletes.

Thanks for your help on this.
