Earl Engman Relays – Meet Preview

 

March 5 th, 2005 Santa Ana College will be the site of the Earl Engman Relays. Originally the Santa Ana Relays, this is one of the oldest track meets in the state dating back to the 1920’s. This year’s meet will be host to 25 schools. Boys and Girls will be divided into three divisions competing in 9 varsity relay events:

Division I Girls:

Much like the Division I boys, the girls will be loaded in the distance relays. Aliso Niguel will be lead by Brittany Bertuzzi (CIF DI 1600m – 9 th 5:06). The Wolverines have plenty of speed in the form of Amber Moore (100m – 12.34), Linsey Amado (200m – 26.13), and Haley Lawerence (400m – 60.34). The El Toro Chargers roll into the meet with a pair of CIF 4 th place finishers from last spring, Molly Pierson (CIF DII 800m – 4 th 2:16) and Erin Albee (CIF DII 400m – 4 th 57.61). Fountain Valley brings the deepest distance team in Orange County to the meet. Footlocker National Cross Country Finalist Crystal Reed (1600m - 5:07) will be highlighted here along the plethora of outstanding distance runners. Robyn Guggiana (3200m – 11:04) of Warren along with sprinter China Fleming (100m – 12.41) should keep Warren in the hunt for medals. Dana Hills comes into the meet favorite to win the shuttle hurdles with Rebecca Marshburn (400m – 59.34) 5 th faster 300 Hurdler returning in state and Trista Martinez. More speed for the Dolphins will come from Marike VanPelt (100m – 12.26) and the distance team will be lead by Jamie Canterbury. The ever versatile Erenda Uriostegui returns for Saddleback who runs everything from 200m to 800m. English Howell (100m – 12.79) also returns for the Roadrunners. Rounding out the division is Yucaipa and sophomore Natalie Arreola (1600m – 5:35).

 

Division II Girls:

Woodbridge comes into the 2005 edition of the Engman Relays as the favorite in the division. Distance superstar Jesse Babcock (5:08 and 11:18) should lead the Warriors, while hurdlers Linsey Herron and Kristen Woepse make them the favorite in the shuttle hurdlers. Mission Viejo’s Krystine Hanberg (100m -12.43 & 200m – 25.58) should be one of the fastest in the division. Lauren Jirges (CIF DII 800m – 5 th 2:16) of Cypress returns for her senior year to lead a team that in recent years has been one of the county’s finest distance programs. Third place in last year meet Mayfair returns with Shenelle Gatson and Ashely Menzies. Division II will also feature Orange’s Leah Richards (1600m – 5:20) and Santa Ana Valley’s Yanelly Estrada (800m – 2:24). Villa Park and Century will also compete in the division.

 

Division III Girls:

Orange Lutheran ran through this division last year scoring a meet high 80 points and winning 7 of the 9 events. Returning several CIF DIV finalist from last spring Lutheran looks to be the heavy favorite in the division. Lutheran is lead by hurdlers Tiffany Pransky (300H – 46.47), Heather Gibson (100H - 15.10), distance runner Kelly Rendon (2:18 & 5:06), Jacquelyn Turner, and Adriana Bracamonte. Santa Ana girls drop to DIII and with them they bring the distance duo of juniors Gail Munoz (1600m – 5:18) and Leanne Ayan (800m - 2:24). Costa Mesa will be lead by Tracy Bjelland, Jasmin Day, and Kayla Flores.. Bolsa Grande’s Rocio Pelayo (CIF DIII 3200m – 8 th 11:37) returns to keep Bolsa Grade in the hunt in the distance relays. Laguna Hills is lead by Tegan Maertz (CIF DIII 800m – 2:20) and Stacy Marcie. Jennifer Bowles (2:20 & 5:15) of Calvary Chapel is one of the county’s hidden gems as she returns from a 2004 season which saw her place top 5 at CIF Finals in both 800m and 1600m. Rounding out the division will be Beckman, Westminster and La Habra.

Division I Boys:

Leading the headlines in this year’s Earl Engman Relays will be All American cross country runner and 1600m and 3200m defending Division II CIF Champion El Toro’s Brandon Bethke. A match up of 1600m champions should occur in both distance relays as host school Santa Ana returns DI CIF Champion Jesse Ramirez (4:13 -1600m & 1:56 – 800m). Returning to the Engman Relays in 2005 is Dana Hills. Scott Smith (4:25 – 1600m) will lead the way for the Dolphins as they should challenge South Coast league rivals El Toro in the distance relays. Last year’s Co-Division I runner up Fountain Valley will be lead by hurdler Chris Dang (15:42 – 110H) who is expected in the shuttle hurdles. Saddleback’s middle distance runner George Sandoval (1:58 – 800m) returns to the meet for his senor season. In a division deep in distance running Yucaipa moves up a division with Raul Gonzalez who is coming off an excellent cross country season which saw him place 10 th in Division I at Southern Section finals. Also competing in DI are last year’s Co-Runner Up Aliso Niguel and Warren.

Division II Boys:

Defending division winner Mission Viejo returns with another strong team as the Diablos open the season ranked #1 in Orange County. 400m runner Brian Goodell finished fourth in CIF DI at 48.96 last spring. Also returning are Elmer Guzman (CIF DI 300m - 6 th 39.93) and distance runner Ricky Pena. Cypress winners of the team sweepstakes 2 of the last 3 years return to challenge Mission Viejo. 2004 State Meet qualifier Garland West (10.74 and 21.79) will lead the way for the Centurions as they will bring a solid core of sprinters including Alex Chang and Morgan Rose. Versatile performer Justin Parga (50.35 – 400m) will be featured in several events for Cypress. Villa Park ranked among the county’s top ten teams brings speed to the meet with 300m Hurdler Chris Treadwell (39.16 – 3 rd DII CIF) and junior Tim Beisner. Mayfair adds to the speed in DII at this year’s meet with hurdler Alterran Verner and sprinter Ricky Simms. Santa Ana Valley distance runners junior Juan Tolento (1:58 – 800m) and Luis Bahena will lead the way for the Falcons. Distance runners Conrad Wozniak of Woodbridge and Luis Medina of Century will add their talents to the distance relays. Orange high will also compete in the division.

Division III Boys:

Thedefending Sweepstakes Champions Orange Lutheran returns to the division to make a run at another title. Lutheran will be lead by Erik Ricca (CIF IV 1600m- 4 th 4:24). Challenging will be Laguna Hills lead by stand out distance runner Dan Reveles. The Hawks also bring distance teammate Darren Faustini and Bobby Haghani (CIF III 400m – 4 th 50.12).. Bolsa Grande brings Victor Guevara (51.32 – 400m) to compete. Beckman, Calvary Chapel, Costa Mesa, La Habra, Westminster and Warren’s Frosh/Soph team will round out the Division III.

 

The Earl Engman Relays, sponsored by the Orange and North Santa Ana Rotarians is scheduled for Saturday, March 5, 2005. The meet consists of 9 varsity relay events:

Divisions: The meet will be divided into 3 boy divisions and 3 girl divisions

Scholarship: Santa Ana High School and Orange High School each will donate $500 towards the annual Earl Engman Scholarship presented in May at the Southern Section Masters Meet

Awards: Medals will be awarded to the top 4 teams in each race. Team trophies will be awarded to the winner and runner up in each division. A sweepstakes award will be given to the team with the highest combined boy and girl score. B Teams will not be awarded medals.

The Earl Engman Relays is an excellent early season meet to assess the ability of your athletes. It is a wonderful opportunity for your team members to earn a varsity medal, run fast times on an all-weather track and build morale in competitive races. As a former manager of this meet and mentor to track and field, Earl Engman is remembered for encouraging widespread participation and dedication to many young individuals.
