WALNUT, Calif., Monday, Feb 14, 200—Retired Mt. San Antonio College coach and professor Don Ruh was honored recently as the recipient of the 2005 Amateur Athletic Foundation of Los Angeles (AAF) Spirit Award.  The ceremony occurred Feb. 10 at the AAF's annual luncheon celebration of National Girls and Women in Sports Day.

“Coach Ruh,” as he is known to many, has been a quiet yet influential force in the Southern California track and field community for many years.  He was the track and field/cross country coach for 31 years at Mt. SAC, where he trained numerous national, world and Olympic champions.  For much of that time, he also directed the Mt. SAC Relays and Cross Country Invitational.

Since 1986, Ruh has coordinated the AAF/Mt. SAC Relay Youth Days Track and Field Program, a partnership now in its 20th year.  The program is the original and longest running program funded by AAF.

The program introduces youngsters to the sport through free clinics, a “munchkin run” and the AAF/Mt. SAC Relays Youth Days Track and Field Meet.  Through the work of Ruh and his wife, Sandi, more than 230,000 youngsters have been introduced to and participated in track and field.
