AAF Free Cross-Country Coaches Clinic

Saturday June 12th, 2004

Another in the great series of Clinics utilizing the funds from the 1984 Olympics throught the Amateur Athletic Foundation

Ken Reeves and Brad Peters - part of super staff!!

It is not too early to start thinking about the 2004 cross country
season and to begin planning your summer training.

Every successful coach knows that great cross country teams are built
during the summer months, so the AAF will host a free Advanced cross
county coaches clinic on Saturday, June 12, at Mt. SAC that will focus
exclusively on every aspect of what to do during the summer season for
high school cross country programs.

The bulk of the clinic sessions will deal with setting up the
appropriate summer training plan for your specific program covering all
aspects from how many miles and what type of quality should be done by
each group of kids, to what types of workouts should be included, to how
often you should meet, to how to integrate new and freshman runners into
your training, to summer running camps, to what to do during the first
official weeks of practice, to incorporating strength training and drills.

Every coach will leave with a full schedule of planned workouts
specifically designed for his or her program for the entire summer
leading right up to the start of school in September.

Leading these sessions, will be state championship coaches who not only
have proven time and time again they know how to develop championship
teams but also know how to present in a clinic format so that all
coaches who attend walk away understanding the important key concepts.

Presenters will include:

Bill Tokar: Ventura High School-2003 Division 1 State Champions—Tokar
brought his girls squad along perfectly last year from June to a
convincing state championship win in November.

Ken Reeves: Ventura College: Reeves worked as an assistant with Tokar
last year on the magical Ventura High School state championship run.
Prior to that he lead Nordhoff High School to 11 state cross country
championships—the most in California State History. No one knows how to
plan a training schedule better!

Kevin Smith: Oak Park High School: Oak Park has won four state cross
country team titles in the past three years and its summer program is
the backbone of that success.

Brad Peters: King High School—Brad helped develop the Ayala High School
teams into national powerhouses in the 90’s before moving on to open
King High School, where he has taken a brand new school and developed it
into a perennial top ten program.

Jonathan Zimmerman: Orange Lutheran High School: Division 4 powerhouse
program. Jon’s perspective will tackle the special problems of summer
training for a private school program.

For all new and inexperienced coaches, there will also be a full
Beginning Level clinic offered on the same day at the same time with
sessions on basic physiological principles of training, building a
program, basic warm-up and stretching, and staying out of trouble with
your school and the CIF.

Any coach, assistant coach or interested adult may attend the clinic.
You can register for the clinic or download the clinic flier at our web

August 14—both at Mt. SAC. More information on those clinics can be
