Mustang Relays - Mira Costa HS (SS)

4/24/04

Thanks for sending along the letter asking for information about the
invitational being held tomorrow at Mira Costa HS. We are very proud of the
Mustang Relays, and prouder still that this will be the first year that we
have been able to hold the event at the high school. A brand-new 9 lane
facility was constructed in 2003, and opened last September. It is a
lightning fast track, which should see some incredible times tomorrow with
one of the finest fields we have ever assembled.

The 21 teams competing at the Mustang Relays are as follows--
Antelope Valley, Banning, Carson, Chadwick, Culver City, La Serna, Loyola,
Mira Costa, North Torrance, Notre Dame Academy, Palos Verdes, Pasadena,
Quartz Hill, South Torrance, St. Bernards, St. Matthias, St. Paul, Torrance,
Warren, West Torrance

Some of the events to watch tomorrow--
Girls Varsity Long Jump--Top notch jumper Danielle Watson (Carson--19'0")
leads a field with half a dozen jumpers expected over 16 feet.

Girls Varsity Shot Put--A South Bay throwers showdown as Mira Costa's
Jennifer Enciso (38'8") and West Torrance's Therriana Loftin (37'9") go
head-to-head.

Boys Varsity 4 x 100--Some of the best speed programs in SoCal come to play
as Carson, Banning, Culver City, Loyola, and Antelope Valley do battle.
There could be as many as six teams in the 42-to-43 second bracket.

In the Distance Races--Some of the best names in South Bay distance will be
in the mix as South Torrance brings Damon Ferrara, West Torrance brings
Nadine Henricks, Allison Kielty and Angela Spadafino, and Mira Costa brings
the Mickelson Twins and Jason Hanakeawe. Other teams bringing some serious
distance firepower will be Loyola (Doug--don't know if they are bringing
Matusak...judging by the times, I would guess that they are), Antelope
Valley, Crescenta Valley, and Warren.

Boys Varsity Shot Put--The 50-foot barrier will get tested by Loyola's Mike
Curiel (52'6") and Tim Walter (50'9"), Quartz Hill's Nick Saylor (51'0"), St
Paul's Matt Parent (52'0") and Mira Costa's Spencer Smith (49'2").

We'll have complete results available to you late Saturday night. We
appreciate your interest in the Mustang Relays, as well as California HS
track and field.
