Margaret Giuffre (Tehachapi)

Central Section Sp/DT Star

After throwing last year in the Southern Section for Thousand Oaks HS, eleventh grader Margaret Giuffre of Tehachapi HS in the Central Section is having a fine 2004 spring season in the Shot Put and the Discus. Thus far this campaign, she has thrown the Shot 39-08 for the #5 mark in the Central Section, and has added nearly 14 feet to her 2003 best of 132-08 with a 2004 best of 146-07 in the Discus! The 146-07 placed her third in the very competitive Arcadia Invitational in mid-April, with that effort, the #8 mark in the entire nation to that point in the season sure to gain her some national recruiting attention!

Tehachapi is slightly isolated, with Margaret relating below the need for some travel to gain some coaching advice each week as well as some travel involved in most of her competitions. She certainly comes from a sporting family, and if she can remain untangled from the bleachers (read below), we look forward to seeing her in Sacramento come June at the State affair!!

1) Sports you have competed in while growing up and including high school?
Soccer, Bobby Sox and club track before High School. In High School, Water Polo and Track

2) What honors did you win last year in Track, if any, and what were your
bests in the weight events?
#1 in shot and discus for both league and County. League was Maramonte. County was Ventura.
Selected to all league and all county . Made it to C.I. F. finals. (Southern Section)
132.8 in discus. 36.3 in shot

3) Why the improvement this year?
Better coaching (Don Crow) and more experience cuz I'm a year older.

4) What are some of your goals for the rest of the spring's track season?
Go to State and stay in the top five. (discus)

5) How far does your school travel to go to meets? Do you view your slight
bit of isolation as an advantage or disadvantage?
1-2 hours one way. Farther for Valley. Maybe 4 hours
Disadvantage cuz I have to drive 45 minutes one- way, three times a week for coaching.
Advantage because most people don't know me or the school, so they don't expect much from me.

6) What are some of your interests and hobbies?
Sports. Chating on line w/friends

7) Anyone else in your family involved in sports in some way?
My Aunt was offered a scholarship to a four year college for hurdles.
My cousin was just offered a scholarship for football
My sister is a sprinter
My Dad did sports in High School and after.

8) Who do you model yourself after as an athlete, if anyone?
No one really. I met Melisa Weis a few years ago. She was really nice and gave me good advice.

9) Any humorous incidents that you can relate about your involvement in track
and field in practice or competition?
I've fallen down the bleachers twice this year so far
