Bellarmine Invitational Preview
This is an “Open” meet. The athletes are entered as they report
to an event, allowing for great flexibility, as needed in the very, very
early season.
Teams entered are: McClymonds and Skyline of Oakland, Moreau Catholic
(Hayward), De la Salle (Concord), Bishop O’Dowd (Oakland), Mercy
Burlingame, Palma (Salinas), Notre Dame (Salinas), Presentation (San Jose),
Notre Dame (San Jose), King’s Academy, and Bellarmine Prep (San
Jose).
Boys
sprints/hurdles
Kenny O”Neal, hot off a California 60m record in the Simplot Indoor
Meet (6.68 #5 AT US High-School) will headline the entire meet, with the
Golden State’s latest hot dasher appearing to have upped it a gear
from outdoors last year where he rocketed a best 10.40 for the 100m event
with a second place finish in the US Junior Nationals at Stanford. He
will definitely be worth keeping an eye on as he steps outside for his
first serious competition of the winter/spring! Jon Flaatan (Moreau Catholic,
Hayward) was 22.53 for 200m last year, with Luke Lippincott (Palma, Salinas)
one of the CCS’s top long sprinters returning at 49.35 for the 400
in placing second in that Section affair last May.
distances
The host school, Bellarmine Prep, brings a great group back for the 2004
season, with two-lappers galore! Matt Bordoni was a State Meet competitor
last year with a 1:54.74 besta, with Alex Guney 1:55.10, and Ian Wintrip
1:57.07! Guney stretched it out to 4:19.27 for the 1600 last spring also!
De la Salle (Concord) had Carey Matthews lead the Fall Cross Country group
to a decisive NCS Division I team win, so they will be tough!
jumps
Roger Francis (De la Salle, Concord) was a 6-06 High-Jumper last spring.
Girls
distances
The fine distance group from Presentation, San Jose will headline this
half of the meet, with Melissa Grelli (4:57.60 1600 and 10:45.01 3200)
one of the nation’s best, and a National CC Finalist this past December.
Teammate Mandy Williams was 2:15.53 last spring for 800m.
jumps
Tayler O’Conner (Mercy, Burlingame) was 5-05 last year in the High
Jump as just a frosh athlete!
