Simplot Indoor Games - Pocatello, Idaho - 2/19-2/21/04

There are no California prep indoor meets left unfortunately, with many of the Golden State stars heading this weekend to Pocatello, Idaho for the Simplot Indoor Games on the campus of Idaho State University. Held on a 200 meter banked board track that is laid down over the floor of an indoor football arena, the setting is magnificent, with the JR Simplot team helping each year to gather a ton of great athletes from around the nation. A good sized group of Californians are heading to the Rocky Mountain area and probably actually a bit of real winter weather to test themselves this weekend. Today, we preview the Golden State Girls, with the Boys done yesterday! It will be a very good meet with some record possibilities and great tests for many of the Golden State's best!! - Read on

Shalonda Solomon winner Nat'l Jr Titles (Kirby Lee) - Carol Rodriguez (Dave Casper)

Event 2 Women 60 Meter Dash Prelims

Shalonda Solomon (LB Poly) heads into her senior year as among the top dozen 100m dasher of all prep history (11.35) and the #6 all-time prep 200m dasher (22.93). She looks ready for a super year before she heads off to the University of South Carolina. A great group will battle her here. Coloradan Ashley Owens (Liberty, Colorado Springs, Colo) is the latest of craft Coach Tony Wells’ stars, with a nation-leading 6.84 at altitude for 55 meters and a 7.34 for 60m, both achieved at altitude. Solomon was 7.00 for 55m and 23.84 in her only indoor races at Reno a few weeks back. Owens has outdoor bests of 11.60 *100m (11.46w), but Coach Wells is able to maximize ever segment of a sprinter’s race, from the blocks through the finish in short sprints, with a series of prep all-time greats over the last few decades from the greater Denver area. Owens will give Solomon and the California group all they can handle here! Carol Rodriguez (LB Wilson) was 11.66 last year and is among the top ten returnees in the nation at that distance—she has raced 24.11 indoors this winter, so she is sharp!! Jennifer Nash (Merrill West, Tracy) was 11.80 (100m) last year, with Jasmine Baldwin (Bishop Amat, La Puente) 11.85, DeAna Carson (LB Wilson) 11.85, Kristina Davis (Logan, Union City) 11.86—Californians should dominate the event’s finals here!! Remember, Friday’s heats are fun in flat soled shoes, so the times there will not be nearly as impressive as the finals. Too many bodies racing on the wood floor track for the hosts the entire weekend.

Robinson was 15.01 last year for the 100m Hurdles outdoors. Talia Stewart (Logan, Un City) was 13.99 outdoors last year, with Jermisha Youngblood (Hercules HS) 14.86 as a middle school age-group star. Shana Woods (LB Poly) was 14.34 last year, with DeAna Carson (LB Wilson) close behind with a 14.35 2003 outdoor best. Galina Becker (Mt. Pleasant, San Jose) was 14.42 in 2003, with Andranicka Fomby (Muir, Pas) 14.67 and Meia Tezeno (Hercules) listed as no time in the seeds, but a 14.79 last spring. Saleena Rashed (Zodiacs TC) was 14.76 last year in the 8th grade for the 100mHH. What a great California representation here. Wow!!

It does not slow down over one lap indoors, with the 200 another cooker!! Shalonda Solomon became one of only nine US Preps in history to run under 23 seconds outdoors for the event with her 22.93 in winning the Pan American Junior Championships last summer! She leads the nation indoors this winter with a fine 23.84, making her among the top dozen preps of all-time. Let’s see if she can go faster this weekend!! She will be pushed! Frosh Devon Williams (Towson Catholic, Towson, Md) has been the star of the indoor season thus far, and if she is healthy she is wicked from 500 to 1600 meters. She has 4:50.76 mile best this winter, and broke the national record for 500m with a 1:11.53 earlier this campaign. Natalie Piccetti, from Texas, and now at Rancho Cucamonga, was a National CC Finalist two years ago, but came to California with a stress fracture this Fall. She was 5:03.99 last year for 1600m outdoors. Evelyn Wing (Presentation, San Jose) was 4:59.34 last spring for 1600m, with Brenda Martinez (also Rancho Cucamonga) 5:01.53 in 2003 for 4 laps.
