Simplot Indoor Games - Pocatello, Idaho - 2/19-2/21/04 There are no California prep indoor meets left unfortunately, with many of the Golden State stars heading this weekend to Pocatello, Idaho for the Simplot Indoor Games on the campus of Idaho State University. Held on a 200 meter banked board track that is laid down over the floor of an indoor football arena, the setting is magnificent, with the JR Simplot team helping each year to gather a ton of great athletes from around the nation. A good sized group of Californians are heading to the Rocky Mountain area and probably actually a bit of real winter weather to test themselves this weekend. Today, we preview the Golden State Boys, tomorrow the young ladies! It will be a very good meet with some record possibilities and great tests for many of the Golden State's best!! - Read on

Derrick Jones (Robert Attical) - Kenny O'Neal (Dave Casper) Two Golden Staters among the nation’s very best, will lead the charge here. Coloradan Jonathan West is the fastest on the seed sheet at 6.15 (he was a 10.74-21.55 sprinter last year outdoors), but Derrick Jones (LB Poly) led the nation indoors for 60m last winter at 6.72 while winning the National Scholastic Indoor affair, with Kenny O’Neal a 10.40 one of the top handful of returnees outdoors for 100m with a second in the US Junior Nationals and Pan Am Jr’s last summer. Rashaad Nunnaly (Sheldon, Elk Grove) was 10.66 last year and is also one of the State’ top returnees over 100m. 3 Luke, Andre 11 San Francisco Se 6.60 California’s best will be severly tested here. Jason Richardson (Cedar Hill, Tx) is the nation’s top outdoor hurdler at 13.51, and has the nation’s #2 60m prep HH time this winter at 7.85. Kevin Craddock (J Logan, Union City), was an amazing 7.45 for the 42” 55MM in Reno a few weekends back, with State placer Marquis Profit (Muir, Pas) along for the ride! The California duo were 13.92 and 14.25 respectively last year. Kofi Coussey (Lynwood) was a top 300m Hurdler last year with a 39.0 best, with Terrance Austin (LB Poly) a 15.19 HH best and 6-6 HJ last year as just a frosh!! 3 Profit, Marquis 12 Mustang Track Cl 7.70
Derrick Jones was 21.54 during an injury-shortened 2003 outdoor season, with Simplot’s altitude and banked turns giving him a good chance here for the one lap event! Carl Crawford (East Union, Manteca) was 10.62 (100m) and 21.61 last year in Sac Joaquin action and will be a factor. New York’s Ian Morgan has run 21.9 for 200m indoors this winter and at 35.04 is among the nation’s top four over 300 yards. New York National Record setter this winter, Elzie Coleman (46.58 indoors) headlines the strong event, with Kevin Craddock having shaded 50 seconds during winter all-comers action this year part of the super field. Jason Richardson (Tex hurdler) will be back here and has run 47.75 indoors this winter, with Utah’s Dan Hutson 48.27, and Michael Hilbe (Az) 48.38, making this one of the meet’s headline events!! Jordan Maris was a part of LB Poly relay teams last year, and Byron Velega from LBP is a top cornerback in football who has signed at UCLA. Michael Johnson (Lincoln, Stockton) was 50.55 as a soph last year outdoors for the 400 7 Craddock, Kevin 11 James Logan 49.10 Event 9 Men 800 Meter Run Prelims Julian Sylve (LB Poly) is one of California’s top returnees at 1:54.90, and he will face Michael Wembley (NY), who leads the nation indoors this winter for 1000m at 2:28.33. Travon Patterson (LBP) could be a factor with a strong effort.
--Pocatello’s altitude is not overly friendly to distance runners, with Aaron Robson (Canada) a 4:19.60 third placer her last year back, with highly seeded Scott Sanders (Ore) an 8:50.67 3000m runner last spring. A good race from San Benito’s Jonathan Rivera (4:25.55) could have him finish among the top half-dozen here. 7 Rivera, Jonathan 12 Tri County Runni 4:25.55 Event 13 Men 3200 Meter Run Todd Clancy (Clover Park, Wash) was 4:29.47 and 9:34.09 in taking the Washington State 3A 1600 and 3200 championships last spring, with North Monterey County’s Nathan Huerta right in the hunt for a very high place with a good effort here. 1 Clancy, Todd 11 Todd Clancy 9:30.00 Event 22 Men 4x400 Meter Relay Prelims Last year’s Penn Relay Champs LB Poly will try to make a statement to start off the 2004 Olympic year in this event. 1 Speed City Track 'A' 3:14.34 Event 24 Men 4x800 Meter Relay Continuing his family’s amazing series of efforts at the Arcadia Invite in the discus, Leif Arrhenius last year was 209-06 there for the best throw of the entire year for preps (his brother set the still standing prep national record of 234-03 there in 2001. Leif has broken the National record in this event twice this winter, with an 82-10 best. Boldizsar Kocsor (University City, SD) emerged this winter after 54-05.75 (SP) and 156-08 (DT) 2003 bests to 56-10.5 in the Citrus Winter Weight Pentathlon that included a 199-08.5 Hammer Throw. He was 67-08 with the weight implement there and will obviously be challenged here! 6-7 310 pound football star O’Neil Roussell, a 55 footer in the Shot last year for Chino HS, will try to carry California’s honor, with the Team Kraychir group children of famed San Jacinto HS and USC thrower, Hank.
Event 34 Men High Jump Anthony Baker (LB Poly) likes to jump indoors—he was third in the National Scholastic Indoor Meet last winter in New York City at 6-08.75, and had a super fall football season before signing at Sacramento State. He is top-seeded here. Soph Terrance Austin was 6-06 as just a frosh last year!

impressively improved Boldi Kocsor from San Diego to Idaho!! A super group will compete in this event, with Nevadan Zack Lloyd a 66-footer and Leif Arrhenius 62-06 this winter. All-State underclass footballer Averill Spicer (Rancho Cucamonga) was 57-00.25 as the JO Intermediate Nat’l Champ last summer, with Boldizsar Kocsor (Uni City, SD) 56-10 5 a few weeks back, hoping to fit in the medal mix. 1 Lloyd, Zack 12 White Pine Count 66-05.00 Event 40 Men Triple Jump Angelo Jeffrey, among the nation’s top ten jumpers with his 48-09 best, will face an amazing team in North Rowan HS of Spencer, NC, with Coach Robert Steele having Andre Tillman (49-04.25 this winter), Terry Wood (48-10), and Mark Sturgis (48-01.5) continue the school’s unreal tradition for turning out jumpers!!! State meet 6th placer Nkosinza Balumbu (47-05.5) helps lead Team Logan in the event.
