RASKE NAMED DIRECTOR OF MEN’S AND WOMEN’S
TRACK AND FIELD/CROSS COUNTRY AT SACRAMENTO STATE - CENTRAL MICHIGAN
COACH TAKES OVER FOR RETIRED JOE NEFF
SACRAMENTO, Calif. — Sacramento State athletics director Terry
Wanless named Kathleen Raske director of men’s and women’s
track and field/cross country, it was announced today. Raske will officially
begin her tenure with the Hornets on Sept. 8. She replaces Joe Neff who
retired following the 2003 season after holding the position for 23 years.
“We are excited Kathleen has decided to join our staff,” Wanless
said. “She is regarded as one of the top coaches in track and field,
and is a great fit for us.”
At Sacramento State, Raske will oversee all aspects of the men’s
and women’s cross country teams as well as the indoor and outdoor
track and field programs.
Raske spent the past six years as head coach of the Central Michigan
women’s cross country and track and field programs. In 2002, she
led CMU to its first Mid-American Conference indoor track championship.
Following the season, she was named MAC Coach of the Year and NCAA Regional
Coach of the Year.
In 2000, she guided the Chippewas to the MAC cross country title.
Raske also coached 15 individual MAC champions and had 44 athletes earn
all-league honors. In her six years, 20 Chippewas qualified for the NCAA
Championships, including three All-Americans.
Prior to working at Central Michigan, Raske was an assistant coach at
Miami (Ohio) and Southern Illinois. While at Miami, she coached both
the men and women in sprints, jumps and hurdles. She had five athletes
win MAC titles and three advance to the NCAA Championships between 1992-97.
From 1989-92, Raske coached at Southern Illinois where she had two athletes
win Missouri Valley Conference crowns.
Raske was a member of the USA Track and Field coaching staff at the
1999 junior Pan-American Games. She also served on the USATF women’s
development committee and on the NCAA rules panel.
Raske competed at Southern Illinois and was inducted into the school’s
Athletic Hall of Fame in 1997. As a sprinter and hurdler, she was an
All-American and holds the conference record in the 200-meter, 55-meter
hurdles and 100-meter hurdles. She has also competed in five U.S. National
Championships, including the 1992 Olympic Trials.
Current Hornet assistant coaches Mike Gipson and Chandra Flinn will
remain on staff for the 2003-04 seasons.

MOUNT PLEASANT -- Central Michigan University women's track and field
head coach Kathleen Raske has taken the position of director of men's
and women's track and field/cross country at Sacramento State University.
"
Kathleen has done an outstanding job as the head coach of women's track
and field, and cross country at Central Michigan University," Director
of Athletics Herb Deromedi said. "The program has been on a steady
rise since she took over and has made it into one of the elite programs
in the conference. Raske has done an excellent job in every facet of
conducting the program."
Raske led her squads to two titles at CMU, one in cross country (2000),
and to the school's first-ever indoor track championship (2002). She
coached 15 conference champions and three All-Americans.
She begins her new job on September 8, replacing Joe Neff who retired
after 23-years on the job. At Sacramento State, Raske will oversee
all aspects of the men's and women's cross country teams as well as
the indoor and outdoor track and field programs.
Assistant coach Karen Lutzke will be the interim cross country coach
at CMU. A nation-wide search will end on August 30 with the hopes of
naming Raske's replacement in early September.

MOUNT PLEASANT - Central Michigan University head women's track and field
and cross country coach Kathleen Raske announced the signing of 11
student-athletes to national letters-of-intent.
"
We were able to sign many state champions," noted Raske. "This
is a large class of athletes and we are excited to see what they can
do. These incoming freshmen will add depth to our program and will help
our team go for the Mid-American Conference title next year.
"
We were looking for athletes that could make an immediate impact. We
took a look at the talent that was leaving the program and feel confident
that this class fills our needs."
Signing national letters-of-intent were: Ariss Seals (Detroit/Cass Tech);
Jenaie Edwards (Detroit/Denby); Mary Raney (Vassar/same); Jena Amell
(Highland/Milford); Jen Vander Meer (Holland/same); Megan Newton (East
Lansing/same); Kate Maxwell (Commerce/Lakland); Lauren Fairbanks (Rogers
City/same); Lisa Krueger (Rockford/same); Allison O'Connor (Croswell/Croswell-Lexington);
and Cora Hawkins (Detroit/MacKenzie).
Also joining the squad as preferred walk-ons will be Audrey Trimpe (Grand
Rapids/East Kentwood), Ashley Anderson (Rochester Hills/Rochester Adams),
and Erin Serkaian (Okemos/same).
Highlighting the 2003-04 incoming freshmen are six state champions from
the 2003 campaign.
Seals won two state championships this past season. She began the 2003
season with an indoor title in the 60m and rounded out the year with
a state title at the outdoor meet in the 100m. She was twice named
all-state as a member of both the 400m and 800m relay teams. While
Seals is a top-notch sprinter, she can also run hurdles. In 2000, Seals
took third in 100m hurdles at the Junior Olympic Nationals.
Joining the middle distance squad next fall will be Edwards. She was
the state champion in the 800m and and ran a leg on the winning regional
800m relay squad. Edwards was also named all-state in the 400m during
the 2002 indoor season.
Raney comes to CMU as the top thrower in the state of Michigan. The Vassar
product is a three-time state champion, earning the top spot twice
in the shot put (2002-03) and in the discus (2003). Raney was all-state
and all-conference all four years.
Amell and Vander Meer each won a state championship in the pole vault.
Amell won the indoor state title in 2003 and has cleared a personal-best
11-0. Vander Meer won the outdoor state title this past season. She
turned in an 11-6 performance at the state meet and is now the Division
I state meet record holder in the pole vault. Vander Meer was also
a two-time regional champion.
Krueger turned in the best season of her high school career this past
year. Not only was Rockford High the Division I state champion but
she was also a member of the championship 3200m and 1600m relay teams.
The Rockford native has been tabbed an All-American for both the indoor
and outdoor seasons and has qualified for the national scholastic championships
as a member of one of the top relay teams in the nation. Krueger has
been tabbed all-state four times and all-conference nine times.
Other highlights for the class include the likes of Newton and Fairbanks.
Newton turned in a sold senior performance, placing fourth at the Division
I state championships in the 1600m. She was four times named all-state
in cross country. Fairbanks was the cross country state champion in
2000 and was the state runner-up in the 800m in 2002 and 2003.
Maxwell, a hurdler and jumper, placed in three events at the state championship
this past year. She placed in the long jump, 100m hurdles, and 300m
hurdles. She was an all-state 300m hurdler in 2002.
O'Connor will be a high jumper for CMU while Hawkins will participate
in hurdles. O'Connor placed in the high jump at the Division II state
meet in 2002 and Hawkins' ran in the 100m hurdles, 300m hurdles and
400m hurdles.

The Central Michigan University women's cross country team finished with
158 points to capture sixth place at the Mid-American Conference Championships
in Oxford, Ohio, on Saturday.
Freshman Teresa Bongiovanni (Washington) led the Chippewas with a 12th-place,
18:11.1 finish in the 6K event, en route to second team All-MAC honors.
Cami Moll (Zeeland/Jr.) turned in a 18:27.5 performance to claim 23rd,
while Karen LeRoy finsihed 34th in 18:41.9.
Toledo (51 points) edged out Ball State (62) and host Miami (63) to
earn the title of conference champions. Kent State (110), Akron (116),
CMU (158), Eastern Michigan (159), Western Michigan (186), Bowling Green
(272), Ohio (281), Northern Illinois (294), Buffalo (305), and Marshall
(369) rounded out the 13-team field.
The Chippewas travel to West Lafayette, Indiana, on November 16 to compete
in the Great Lakes Regionals. The meet is scheduled to start at 11:00
a.m.

MOUNT PLEASANT - The Central Michigan University women's track and field
squad finished the three-day Mid-American Conference championships
in seventh place.
The Chippewas finished the event with 60.5 points, 49 points behind first-place
Eastern Michigan.
The top CMU finisher on the final day of competition was Jackie Smart
in the triple jump. She finished in third place with a regional-qualifying
mark of 41-5 ¾.
The other top Chippewa performers were: Brook Creed's fourth-place finish
in the 1500m (4:31.33); Fallon Bailey taking fifith in the 100m (11.96);
and Jackie Bozin taking sixth in the high jump (5-5).
CMU has numerous athletes with NCAA regional qualifying marks that will
compete on May 30-31 for a chance to take part in nationals.
