Youth athletes storm into Miami
for Junior Olympics INDIANAPOLIS- America's next generation of track & field stars will compete at the 2003 USA Track & Field Junior Olympic National Championships July 29-Aug 3 in Miami, Florida. The third leg of the Verizon Youth Series, the six-day meet at Tropical Park Stadium will showcase more than 7,000 youth athletes from across the country in the largest youth athlete developmental program in the world. “The Junior Olympic National Championships are a highlight for USA Track & Field each year,” said USATF CEO Craig Masback. “It is an essential part of our overall athlete development program, and has been a reliable proving ground for future Olympic greats. We thank the Miami-Dade Parks & Recreation Department for hosting this outstanding event.” Competition age divisions and corresponding birth years for Junior Olympics are as follows: Bantam (1993-later), Midget (1991-1992), Youth (1989-1990), Intermediate (1987-1988), and Young Men/Women (1985-1986); athletes born in 1984 are also eligible if they will still be 18 on July 28, 2003. The Junior Olympics Nationals is the largest event of the Verizon Youth Series, which includes the annual USA Junior Track & Field Championships, Youth Athletics Championships and Junior Cross Country Championships. Verizon honors male and female athletes-of-the meet at each event of the series. At the 2003 Youth Athletics Championships, July 2-6 in Buffalo, N.Y., Michael Grant (Collins Hill High School- Ga.) was the male recipient and Courtney Champion (Stephenson High School – Ga.) was the female recipient. Ken Ferguson (University of South Carolina), Molly Huddle (University of Notre Dame) and Shalonda Solomon (Long Beach Poly High School- Calif.) were named the Verizon Youth Athletes of the meet at the 2003 USA Junior Track & Field Championships, June 19-22 in Palo Alto, Calif.
