(Kirby Lee photo) Shalonda Solomon named USA Track & Field Athlete of the Week INDIANAPOLIS – California prep star Shalonda Solomon has been named USA Track & Field’s Athlete of the Week after breaking the championships record in the women’s 200m en route to winning three gold medals at the 2003 Pan American Junior Championships in Waterford, St. Michael, Barbados, over the weekend. The Long Beach Poly High School senior first ran 23.21 seconds in the preliminary round of the 200 to better Jamaican Liliana Allen’s previous record of 23.29, set in 1989. The 17-year-old Solomon later improved her record to 22.93 in the final round to win the gold medal. The 2003 U.S. junior 100m and 200m champion, Solomon also won the Pan Am Junior 100m in 11.35 seconds and anchored the Team USA squad of Ashley Owens, Juanita Broaddus and Alandra Sherman to win her third gold, in the women’s 4x100m relay (44.00). Other standout performers at the Pan American Junior Championships included the University of South Carolina’s Kenneth Ferguson, who set a championships record in winning the men’s 110m hurdles and like Solomon won three gold medals. The sophomore-to-be had a time of 13.60 seconds in the high hurdles to better Rodney Wilson’s record of 13.71 from 1980. A native of Detroit, Ferguson also won the 400m hurdles in 50.07 and ran the third leg on the 4x400m relay team of Elzie Coleman, Jeremy Wariner and Ashton Collins that set a record of 3:02.88, bettering the 3:03.53 set by Team USA in 1991. Also at the Pan Am Juniors, Team USA’s men’s 4x100m relay team of Carlos Moore, Aaron Collins, Ashton Collins and Willie Hordge set a record to win gold in 39.29, bettering Team USA’s 39.42 set in 1982. In open competition last week, 2003 U.S. runner-up Bershawn Jackson ran a U.S.-leading time of 48.23 Friday at the Meeting de Madrid 2012 in Madrid. Now in its third year, USATF’s Athlete of the Week program is designed to recognize outstanding performers at all levels of the sport. USATF names a new honoree each week and features the athlete on the USATF Web site.
