Buffalo to host 2004 USA Junior Championships - June 24-27 - 2004

Meet will be qualifier for the World Junior Championships in Italy next July. Also, this June 24-27 date means the Golden West Invitational and Adidas Outdoor Championships will not be in date conflict next year, with each on a different weekend.

BUFFALO, N.Y. – The City of Buffalo and USA Track & Field’s Niagara Association will host the 2004 USA Junior Outdoor Track & Field Championships, USATF CEO Craig Masback announced Thursday.

To be held June 24-27, 2004 at the University at Buffalo, the USA Junior Championships are the premiere event of USA Track & Field’s Verizon Youth Series. The meet will bring nearly 1,000 of the country’s finest athletes ages 19 and under to Buffalo and Erie County, where they will compete for the right to represent Team USA at the 2004 IAAF World Junior Championships July 13-18 in Grosseto, Italy. At the 2002 World Junior Championships in Kingston, Jamaica, Team won 21 medals – including nine golds – to set a record for the most medals ever won at a single World Junior Championships.

Masback made the announcement at a press conference held in conjunction with the 2003 National Youth Athletics Championships, being held July 2-6 in Buffalo.

“The Junior Championships is where our future Olympic champions literally get their start. Fans will see several of these young athletes competing on the World Championships and Olympic stages in the near future,” Masback said. “Buffalo and the Niagara Association have a strong record in hosting championship track meets for junior and youth athletes, and we look forward to returning here next year.”

With the 2004 USA Junior Championships, Buffalo will have hosted all three of USATF’s annual junior and youth championship events. In addition to hosting the 2003 Youth Athletics Championships, in 2000 the city hosted the Junior Olympic National Championships.

The University at Buffalo facility seats 35,000 spectators around an eight-lane, all-weather track, and has been the site of the 1993 World University Games; 1995 NCAA Division I National Track and Field Championships; 1995 World WAVA Games; 1997 Empire State Games; 2000-2002 NJCAA Division III National Track and Field Championships; and the 2002 Special Olympics National Championships.

“The Buffalo Niagara Convention & Visitors Bureau’s aggressive approach to marketing to amateur athletics has been rewarded by attracting such prestigious events as the 2004 USA Junior Outdoor Track & Field Championships,” said Richard Geiger, President Buffalo Niagara Convention & Visitors Bureau. “Our efforts are enhanced by the support of Erie County; the availability of a superior track and field venue such as we have here at the University at Buffalo; and dedicated local organizers such as Ron Graham.”
