Grace Upshaw (former Acalanes HS and UC Berkeley star ) named Athlete of the Week
7-1-2003

INDIANAPOLIS – Long jumper Grace Upshaw has been named USA Track & Field’s Athlete of the Week following her win at the 2003 Norwich Union Challenge at Glasgow, Scotland.

With her victory on Sunday, Upshaw defeated Russia’s Tatyana Kotova, currently ranked the world’s #1 long jumper by the IAAF, and ended Kotova’s run of 18 months without a loss. The 2003 USA Outdoor champion, Upshaw won on Sunday with a leap of 6.99 meters/22 feet, 11.25 inches (wind +4.9 meters per second). The 2002 European and World Cup champion, 2003 World Indoor gold medalist and 2001 World Outdoor silver medalist, Kotova finished as the runner-up to Upshaw with a best of 6.94m/22-9.25 (+3.8 mps).

Another top performance was turned in last week by USA Outdoor women’s high jump champion Amy Acuff, who continued her strong outdoor season with a win at Glasgow over current world leader Marina Kuptsova of Russia. Unfazed by the stiff breeze that hampered most athletes on Sunday, Acuff cleared a seasonal best of 1.98 meters/6 feet, 6 inches for the win.

Now in its third year, USATF’s Athlete of the Week program is designed to recognize outstanding performers at all levels of the sport. USATF names a new honoree each week and features the athlete on the USATF Web site. Selections are based on top performances and results from the previous week.
