Golden State Prospects

Girls

North HS's National Record Setting Shuttle Hurdle Relay team, which destroyed the old record by nearly a second and a half, will have Domenique Manning and Gayle Hunter competing in the World Youth Meet

100 Meter hurdles

Domenique Manning (North HS, Riverside) - they ran 30" hurdles two years ago at the World Youth Meet, and it is assumed they will this time around. This may favor the short Manning. Two years ago Ashley Lodree (El Cerrito) had a super meet, placing second at the World Youth Meet at 13.75. Lodree injured for a year, was one place ahead of Manning at this year's State Meet, with no reason to believe Domenique could not go to the World meet and have the same success as Ashley. Teammate Floridan Pavielle James is the World Youth leader at 13.69 for the year, with Manning among the top handful off entry times. It took 14.09 and 14.21 from the two semi-final races to move to the Finals back in 2001. Some solid running could have the latest North HS of Riverside hurdle star back from Canada with a medal.

400 Meter Hurdles

Mackenzie Hill at the USATF Jr's where she raced 58.39 for the one lap barrier event

Mackenzie Hil (LB Wilson HS) - Hill was super a week ago at the US Jr Nationals, racing among US Prep history's top twenty times ever with her 58.39 for this distance event that featured a great close. If Hill can go the rounds at the World Youth Meet in similar style she could come home with a medal. 58.72 took the 2001 World Youth Meet, with 59.41 the bronze that year. There is some great competition this go-round. Zuzana Hejnova (Czechoslovakia) has run 57.55, with Yang Ning (China) 58.94, and Russian Katya Kostetskaya 59.26, with Kostetskaya a foreign exchange student in Arkansas amazingly, with a 2:05.95 800 best to win the Adidas Outdoor Championships in mid-June.

High Jump

Desirae Gonder (Stockdale, Bakersfield)

Solid event at the world level! Anika Smit (Republic South Africa) leads this event worldwide for the year with a 6-01 best. Desirae, who just finished a super frosh year in the event, is among the top ten worldwide at this level with her 5-10.5 best. In 2001 the winning jump was 6-01.5 at the World Youth Meet, with 5-11.25 the mark for the second and third finishers. It took 5-06.75 to make the finals that year, a mark that Desirae should not have a problem with this year, though the depth of the 2003 group seems a bit better than two years. back.

Long Jump

DeAna Carson (Vista del Lago HS, Moreno Valley)

This is another event that is of a very high quality world-wide. DeAna's 19-07 indoors is among the top 20 worldwide at the Youth under 18 level for the year. The best this season is 20-01.5 by Zhanna Demydova of the Ukraine. In the 2001 World Youth Meet the winner was 21-00.25, with 20-08.75 and 19-09.25 taking the other two medals. It took 18-06.5 to make the finals in 2001, with 2003's group appearing to have a bit more depth, with that mark probably a bit tougher this time around.

Triple Jump

Brittany Daniels

Brittaney Daniels (Merrill West HS, Tracy)

The field events are at a very high level in the rest of the world. The 2003 World Youth leader is Indira Valladares of Cuba at 44-03.5, with Brittany Daniels among the top half dozen in the world for the year at this Youth level. In the 2001 meet the winner was out over 45 feet, with Michelle Sanford (Woodbridge) taking the silver medal at 43-04.5. Sanford roared from way back in the field on her final effort after she stated that she copied the form of others in the field on her last jumps, an interesting during the competition adjustment. It took 40-02.5 to make the finals in 2001, with Daniels, off a strong recent US Jr National competition and series of very strong meets during the spring hoping to bound out into personal record land and bring home a medal.

Heptathlon

Gayle Hunter (JW North HS, Riverside)

This event is very, very solid around the world. The medalists in 2001 scored 5470-5346 and 5296 points, with the USA's best, Ashley Selig of Nebraska 15th at 4674. Gayle Hunter scored 4797 two years back as a frosh athlete, and she has the potential to obviously score much more than that in 2003. 8th place in 2001 was 5023 in this very competitive event that will be a great test for another talented North HS athlete.
