Ed Cornell (Burroughs, Ridgecrest) - 11th Grade Discus Thrower to World Youth Championships in Canada in mid-July!! Every two years the World Youth (under age 18) Championships are held at some venue around the world by the IAAF (International Amateur Athletic Federation), the group that runs the sport at the International level. This coming summer they will be held in Sherbrooke, Canada, in the eastern part of the country July 9-13th. A number of Californians will attend the competition, with Ed Cornell (Burroughs, Ridgecrest) selected off his efforts over the last year in the sport. Ed finished his season this year with a runner-up effort in the SS Division III Discus throw. We asked Ed and his family for some reaction to the team selection, which they summarized below, with we hope some continued reaction to the gathering of the team, travel to Canada, international level competition, and what was learned by such an experience. "Our family was very surprised and very proud of our son,
Eddie Cornell, as being selected by the USAT&F Committee as one of
the 2 Nationally recognized discus throwers to compete in this summer’s
IAAF World Youth Championships. It took a while for us to realize what
an honor it is to be selected as one of the representatives on the USA
Team. Ed is looking forward to training and competing against the world’s
best youth discus throwers this summer up in Canada. Ed was contacted today (via school) that he was selected from
the best HS discus throwers in the country (15-17 yr old) to participate
as a member of the USA Track & Field Team in the IAAF World Youth
Championships this summer in Canada. It is held every 2 years ( in Poland
2 years ago). He will join the Team In Buffalo about 2 weeks before the Championship, where he will ‘tuneup’ at the USAT&F National Championship, and train for the world championships. (Early July)" Link to World Youth Championships Site Getting last minute things ready to travel to Ironwood (Idaho
Camp for throwers) 6/21/03 . Ironwood site at: Will put together some stuff after the trip..this is our 3rd time there. Usually about 200 boys/girls (40/60 split) for all 4 throwing
events. One of the best things is eating, chatting, ‘playing’
around with some of the better coaches, and a # of Olympians (talking
to Wolfgang Schmidt was great last year..I ‘thought’ he was
dead, smile, but his story is they cut him off at his throwing prime,
in east Germany because he was good friends with Mac Wilkins and they
thought he would defect!!!).
