Coaches John Mahr (Sultana), Vince O'Boyle
(UC Irvine) and Ken Reeves (Ventura HS/Ventura College), Dave DeLong (Canyon
HS, Canyon Country) and Mark Conover (Cal Poly San Luis Obispo) will be
among those coaches presenting topics at the summertime AAF Cross-Country
Clinics in 2003. The first one is at Mt. SAC this weekend (July 12-13),
which is a great fot for track and field fans as Mt. will host the
Mid-Summer Games at the same
time!
AAF Coaching Clinics
are here again!
NCAA Division one coaches
Vince O’Boyle of UCI and Mark Conover of Cal Poly San Luis Obispo
will join with five high school coaches whose teams won their Divisions
at the 2002 California State Cross Country Championships along with some
of the finest presenters in the sport as once again the Amateur Athletic
Foundation of Los Angeles presents free of charge to all coaches who would
like to attend three outstanding cross country clinics specifically geared
for high school coaches.
Coaches of all abilities and experience
levels from the rookie to the 20 year veteran will benefit as there will
be a full Beginning Section and a full Advanced Section offered at each
one of the three clinics which will be held July 12 at Mt. SAC in Walnut,
July 19 at Mt. Carmel High School in San Diego, and the “Super Summer”
Clinic August 23 at Mt. SAC
The Beginning Level Curriculum offered
at each clinic has been honed over the past decade to prepare a coach
to handle all the complexities of running a high school program, including
sessions outlining the physiological principles of training the high school
runner and how to actually set up a season long training plan. There will
also be sessions on recruiting and building a program, proper warm-up
and cool down techniques, and a full session dealing with all the rules,
forms, and procedures every coach needs to know.
The Advanced Section will be
completely different at each one of the three clinics and will focus on
the training philosophies of these successful programs; furthermore, the
“Super Summer” Clinic will focus on racing well at Mt. SAC—the
Southern Section Finals Course--and Woodward Park—the State Championship
course.
Coaches can download additional
clinic info, the clinic agenda, and a printable registration form or register
themselves and their staffs on-line for one, two or all three of the clinics
by going to the AAF web site at… www.aafla.org and selecting “Coaching
Education” and “AAF Coaching Clinics”.
Even though each clinic
is free, the first 50 coaches who register for each clinic will receive
a free gift compliments of Venue Sports at the clinic.
For more information
or to answer any questions, you can contact the clinic director, Tim O’Rourke
(Phone: 626-890-1192 or e-mail [email protected]).
Vince O’Boyle,
Big West Conference Coach of the Year 18 times and the Director of Track
and Cross Country at UCI, will be the keynote speaker at the July 12 clinic,
which will be held at Mt. SAC. Also speaking will be John Mahr, whose
Sultana team not only won the 2002 State Championship but also ran the
fastest team time in Woodward Park history; and Kevin Smith and JJ Castner,
who led their Oak Park squads to both the boys and girls state titles
last season.
Ken Reeves, Bill
Tokar, John Zimmerman, Michelle Buchicchio, Sharon Zimmerman and Tim O’Rourke
will also be presenting.
The second
summer clinic will be held in the San Diego area at Mt. Carmel High School
in Poway on July 19. Steve Chavez, head coach of the 2002 state champion
Murrietta Valley Nighthawks, will be outlining how he and his staff have
taken the philosophy of distance guru Dr. Joe Vigil and adapted it successfully
to their high school program, and Dave DeLong, whose boys and girls teams
at Canyon High School have both been in the top echelon of high school
programs, will step by step outline his comprehensive distance training
program.
The “Super
Summer Clinic”, which will be held on August 23 at Mt. SAC, will
feature Mark Conover of Cal Poly San Luis Obispo, who has become one of
the elite NCAA Division 1 coaches on the West Coast.
Mark will be joined
by seven high school coaches who have won a total of 21 state cross country
titles, and they will not only be outlining their distance training programs
and philosophies but they also will be addressing how to prepare teams
to specifically race well at Woodward Park (home of the state meet) and
Mt. SAC (home of the CIF Southern Section Championships)—included
will also be their philosophies on how best to actually race on each one
of these important courses.
There will also
be specialized advanced sessions on building core strength, designing
and implementing a plyometric program, and the physiology of recovery.
More than 500 coaches
attended one of these great clinics last summer. Don’t miss this
opportunity, register today.
