Women's Decathlon

Posted on the Internet by Roger Ruth, from Victoria, British Columbia, Canada

In June of last year, I wrote to ask,

>Does anyone know what progress is being made toward establishing the
>decathlon as a women's event? Are any plans underway for holding decathlon
>competitions in the 2003 season? Have any already been held?

In off-list correspondence at the time, I learned that:

- In its meeting at Edmonton, in August of 2001, the IAAF Congress
officially recognized the event.

- The IAAF is prepared to ratify initial world records as of 31 December
2003, provided that the mark for seniors is more than 8,000 points and that
for juniors is more than 7300 points.

- Scoring would be based on current heptathlon tables, plus additional ones
already prepared for the IAAF by Viktor Trkal.

- There was some disagreement among correspondents about what should be the
order of events, but Benoit Laruel, IAAF Technical Officer, listed the
order as 100m, Discus, Pole Vault, Javelin, 400m //// 100m Hurdles, Long
Jump, Shot Put, High Jump and 1500m.

With that opportunity to establish world records during this outdoor
season, I'm surprised that I haven't yet seen any marks posted. Does anyone
know of any competitions that have been held or are planned?

Enn Endj rv sent me these results of a meet held June 28/29 in Vienna:

1 Magolis Garcia, Cuba 7245

12.30, 35.98, 2.30, 47.12, 59.88, 13.92, 5.53, 13.69, 1.72, 5:46.14

2 Mari Allese, Estonia 5811

13.32, 27.65, 2.80, 28.06, 62.26, 15.54, 5.32, 9.06, 1.51, 5:33.65

3 Liisi Marks, Estonia 5426

13.18, 28.90, 2.60, 30.62, 62,13m 16.82, 4.82, 9.32, 1.54, 6:05.58

If anyone knows of other women's decathlon scores and would like to send
them along off-list, I'd be glad to summarize them as tentative targets for
future competitions.

Cheers,
Roger
