Pac-10 Track and Field Championships
SCHEDULE OF EVENTS Saturday, May 17 Track Events * - West Los Angeles Community College Sunday, May 18 Track Events * - West Los Angeles Community College WALNUT CREEK, CALIF. -- The Pacific-10 Conference Track and Field Championships presented by arco/ampm (73rd annual for men, 17th annual for women) get underway in Los Angeles, Calif. this Saturday and Sunday, May 17-18. USC will host the event at the Katherine B. Loker Stadium (2,000). Activities at Katherin B. Loker Stadium begin Saturday, May 17 at 11:00 a.m. PT, and Sunday, May 18 at 12:00 noon PT. The hammer competition will take place at West Los Angeles Community College. (women's hammer will take place Saturday at 10 a.m., the men on Sunday at 9 a.m.) Admission is $10.00 per day, while tickets for children under 12 are $5.00. A two-day ticket is available for $20.00 for adults. MEN'S THEME . . . STANFORD will attempt to make it three consecutive Pac-10 titles behind the strength of its middle and long distance runners. However, ARIZONA STATE and USC's sprint corps should keep the Cardinal in check...ARIZONA will count on points from freshman distance runner Robert Cheseret (5000m - 13:45.88) and sophomore hurdler Jeff Hunter (110m hurdles - 13.86, 400m hurdles - 51.41), as well as sophomore Sean Shields in the throws (SP - 64-3i, DT - 187-7)...ARIZONA STATE has a young group of sprinters with freshman Lewis Banda (400m - 45.68/No. 1 Pac-10) and sophomores Jason Barton (400m - 46.00) and Seth Amoo (200m - 21.01i, 400m - 46.33). They are a big reason why the Sun Devil 4x400 relay posted the eighth best time in Pac-10 history at 3:02.81...CALIFORNIA freshman Teak Wilburn will battle for top honors in the high jump (7-3 1/4), while freshman teammate Rhuben Williams will look to score points for the Golden Bears in the shot put (60-5 1/4) and hammer (202-7)...OREGON has a head start on the competition as it picked up 19 points in the decathlon last week. Senior Santiago Lorenzo captured his second Pac-10 decathlon title and has met qualifying standards in the 110m hurdles (14.42), 400m hurdles (52.26) and long jump (23-9 1/2W). The Ducks own the Pac-10's top two javelin marks behind the throws of junior Adam Jenkins (221-4) and seanior John Stiegeler (220-0)...STANFORD owns the seven of the top nine marks in the 1500 meters, led by junior Grant Robison (3:43.07). It owns 10 of the top 16 in the 5000 meters behind Louis Luchini (13:31.80), and the top three in the 10,000 meters paced by Ian Dobson (28:39.55). However, it could bet the performance of senior Milton Little (100m - 10.56w, 200 meters - 21.31, LJ - 25-11) that will keep the Cardinal in the hunt for their third Pac-10 crown...UCLA will look to win its first Pac-10 title since 1998 behind sophomore Ben Aragon and junior Nick Thorton. Aragon owns the Pac-10's season best 800 meter time at 1:48.48, while Thorton's No. 2 at 1:49.42. The Bruins expect to pick up points in the throws behind senior Scott Wiegand (SP - 65-3 1/4i) and junior Dan Ames (DT - 200-9, SP - 64-8 3/4i)...Sophomore Wes Felix will lead USC in the 100 meters (10.24w0 and 200 meters (20.79). Senior Ryan Wilson owns the league's top times in the 110-meter hurdles (13.50) and 400-meter hurdles (49.67). More points are expected in the jumps for the Trojans behind sophomore Allen Simms (LJ - 26-3 3/4, TJ - 56-7 1/2i *Pac-10 record) and senior Julien Kapek (TJ - 55-4 3/4, LJ - 24-2 1/2)...WASHINGTON senior Brad Walker owns the Pac-10 record in the pole vault (19-0 1/4i), while junior Eric Garner will boost the Huskies chances in the 800 meters (1:50.74) and 1,500 meters (3:44.37)...WASHINGTON STATE senior Bennie Chatman (100m - 10.19w) and junior Anthony Buchanan (100m - 10.26, 200m - 21.22) provide point possibilities for the Cougars as will senior Eric Dudley (400-meter hurdles - 49.70). WOMEN'S THEME . . . UCLA will be in search of its seventh consecutive women's Pac-10 title, but if the last three championships are any indication, the Bruins will have their hands full. USC has battled UCLA to the end in each of those championships, coming in second by three points last season, two points the year before and by 6.5 points in 2000. Individuals from those two schools combine to own the top marks in 12 of 22 events...ARIZONA freshman Angel Perkins will look to battle for top honors in the 200m (23.90) and 400m (52.49). The Wildcats will look for points in the pole vault where Amy Linnen (14-5) and Connie Jerez (13-7 1/4) are two of only four vaulters in the Pac-10 to clear 13-7 this season...ARIZONA STATE senior Lisa Aguilera has been a dominate performer in the 3000-meter steeplechase and will attempt to defend her Pac-10 title. Her time of 9:51.65 leads the Pac-10 by more than 30 seconds. Long jumper Tiffany Greer is another Sun Devil looking to defend her title as she's posted the Pac-10's best mark this season at 20-3...The CALIFORNIA Golden Bears will look to the hurdles to score points behind Deanna Slaton (400m hurdles - 58.93) and Osarhiemen Omwanghe (400m hurdles - 60.31, 100m hurdles - 13.60)...The OREGON Ducks have thrived in the field events this season behind Becky Holliday (PV - 14-5 1/4), Niki McEwen (PV - 14-1 1/4), Mary Etter (DT - 176-0), Roslyn Lundeen (JT - 158-3) and Elisa Crumley (JT - 157-11)...Like the men, the STANFORD women will be loaded in the distance races. The Cardinal will be led by Malindi Elmore (1500m - 4:17.15), Lauren Fleshman (5000m - 15:23.94) and Alicia Craig (5000m - 15:25.75). Also picking up points for the Cardinal should be Jillian Camarena in the shot put (55-10 1/2)...Monique Henderson leads a talented UCLA squad. She has posted the league's best time in the 400m (52.23), while also showing impressive marks in the 100m (11.67) and 200m (23.49i). Bruin teammate Sheena Johnson has posted the best times this season in the 100m hurdles (13.28) and 400m hurdles (57.79). Add Chaniqua Ross in the shot put (54-9 1/4) and discus (183-7) and the Bruins will look to pick up big numbers in the field events as well...USC's Natasha Mayers boasts the Pac-10's best this season in the 100m (11.09) and 200m (23.00), while dominate field performances have come from teammates Julianna Tudja (HT - 218-5) and Inga Stasiulionyte (JT - 177-3)...The WASHINGTON Huskies will look for points from Courtney Inman in the 1500m (4:17.39) and Sabrina Monro in the 10,000m (33:32.28). In addition, Heather Reichmann has added considerable distance in the javelin (159-2) over the last couple of weeks...Senior Ellanne Richardson picked up her third consecutive Pac-10 heptathlon title, helping WASHINGTON STATE accumulate 16 points in the early going. She has a chance to increase that total with a strong showing in the 100m hurdles (13.52). The Cougars will look to add points with key performances from Whitney Evans (HJ - 6-0 3/4) and Anna Blue (5000m - 16:14.55, 10,000m - 34:25.63). DECATHLON/HEPTATHLON. . . OREGON senior Santiago Lorenzo won his second Pac-10 decathlon title last weekend, while WASHINGTON STATE senior Ellannee Richardson successfully defended the women's heptathlon and has won the event three consecutive years. Lorenzo amassed 7,564 points, while teammates Jason Slye and Andy Young finished fourth and fifth respectively to give the Ducks 19 points heading into this weekend's competition. Richardson tallied 5,766 points to join Stanfords Tracye Lawyer (1997-99) as the only three-time Pac-10 Heptathlon champions. Teammates Diane Pickler and Louise Akesson added fifth and eighth place finishes to give the Cougars 16 points and an early lead on the competition. DEFENDING PAC-10 CHAMPIONS . . . ARIZONA STATE CALIFORNIA OREGON STANFORD UCLA USC WASHINGTON WASHINGTON STATE LAST YEAR . . . By the strength of its distance runners STANFORD won its second consecutive Pac-10 Championship with 151 points. The Cardinal men scored 77 points in three events alone (1500m, 5000m, 10,000m). Oregon finished second with 125 points, its best showing since 1996. WASHINGTON STATE's Anson Henry took advantage of the home track as he swept the 100m (10.29) and 200m (20.52)... UCLA won its sixth consecutive Pac-10 women's title, and 13th overall, with a three-point victory over second place USC (160-157). UCLA's Lena Nilsson was the only dual winner on the women's side, picking up titles in the 800m (2:03.88) and 1500m (4:20.81). NCAA CHAMPIONSHIPS . . . Stanford will host NCAA West Regionals on May 30-31. The top five finishers from each regional event automatically advance to the NCAA Championships. This year's national championships will be held June 11-14 at Cal State Sacramento, Sacramento, Calif. 2004 PAC-10 CHAMPIONSHIPS AT ARIZONA. . . The University of Arizona will host the 2004 Pac-10 Championships, its first since 1995. The Championships will be held at Drachman Stadium (cap. 5,000). MEET HISTORY . . . Clearly the nation's most successful track and field Conference ever, the Pacific-10 Conference has produced such track and field greats as Ato Boldon, John Godina, Balazs Kiss, Mike Powell, Greg Foster, Kevin Young, Andre Phillips, James Robinson, Herman Frazier, Steve Lewis, Joaquim Cruz, Jackie Joyner-Kersee, Florence Griffith-Joyner, Evelyn Ashford, Henry Rono, Steve Prefontaine, Bob Mathias, Bob Seagren, Gail Devers, Sheila Hudson, Willie Banks, Quincy Watts, Alberto Salazar and Mac Wilkins, to name just a few. Pac-10 schools have won an unprecedented 45 of 80 NCAA men's team titles (USC 26, UCLA 8, OREGON 5, STANFORD 4, ARIZONA STATE 1, CALIFORNIA 1), while four of the 21 women's titles have gone to Pac-10 teams (UCLA 2, OREGON 1, USC 1).
