Cal State L.A. Names Christopher Asher Head Cross Country/Track and Field Coach

LOS ANGELES -- Christopher Asher has been named Head Coach for the Cal State L.A. Women's Cross Country and Men's and Women's Track and Field teams, it was announced today by Cal State L.A. Athletic Director Carol M. Dunn.

"We are very pleased to officially welcome Christopher to our Golden Eagle family as the permanent head coach," said Dunn. "He has brought in great talent and has done a wonderful job in starting to re-establish Cal State L.A.'s cross country and track and field programs into national powers."

Asher has served in the interim head coach capacity since September 2002, guiding the Golden Eagles to seven CCAA titles at the conference championships last week and six qualifiers for the NCAA Championships scheduled for May 22-24 in Edwardsville, Illinois. The seven conference titles is the most since 1998 when Cal State L.A. took home a total of 12 championships.

Prior to his interim tenure as CSULA head coach, Asher served five seasons as an assistant coach at Cal State Fullerton, where he was responsible for overseeing sprints, hurdles and relays for both the men's and women's teams. His student-athletes earned 19 All-Big West Conference honors, four Big West Conference individual championships and one USATF Junior National All-American award. Asher also was integral in CSUF student-athletes setting 20 school records under his five-year tutelage.

He also has coached several elite athletes, including sprinter Joe Criner, hurdler Derek Knight and current NFL running back Reuben Droughns (Denver Broncos) and defensive back Damien Richardson (Carolina Panthers).

Asher competed collegiately at Cal State Northridge from 1994-96. He earned his B.A. in Pan-African Studies from Cal State Northridge in 1998 and his Master's Degree in Physical Education from Azusa Pacific in 2001.

"I feel privileged and honored to have the opportunity to lead Cal State L.A.'s program back to national prominence, and am very excited about sending six Golden Eagles to next week's NCAA Championships," said Asher. "With our current coaching staff and the three top-level student-athletes we've already signed to letters of intent, Cal State L.A. is on track to reclaim its place as the top program on the west coast and in the nation."
