One sensed the conditions at this past weekend's Sacramento Meet of Champions were a bit challenging, with some dire weather forecasts beforehand, and it appears significant moisture during the day of the meet. It is a tribute to the volunteers who worked the meet and the competitive spirit of the athletes (after all it is May!!) that the affair came off with some very good results!! We asked Kira Costa (Memorial, Fresno) to write up briefly her experiences at this year's affair, as wet conditions in the pole vault often times the most difficult for athletes to overcome. Her summary below gives one a good sense of how all overcame some challenging conditions and situations and left with the kind of a "toughening" experience that will lead to bigger and better successes down the competitive road.

Thanks Kira!

Hey Doug!

The Meet of Champions was run very well, depsite the weather conditions. I wasn't too sure going up Friday night or Saturday morning if we would actually be able to compete. The rain clouds were moving pretty fast all day..so there were just a few breaks of sunshine. The boys competition before us had to stop. When it cleared up..all of us girls just got on the runway and started to jump! It stayed clear throughout the most part..until my turn to come in! It rained pretty hard for about 10 minutes and then cleared up a bit. The temperature got pretty chilly and it felt like we were jumping into a lake! It was definitely a good experience, however, to jump under those conditions. Everyone was pretty headstrong throughout the day...girls and guys alike and in every event. There were times when it was like "I cant believe they are still jumping? or running hurdles???...etc" But the meet went on and was very successful. The stadium there is just unbelievable, and it is enough to get anybody hyped up.
