Ah, the great Track and Field Dual Meets!!! - Chris Watkins (Mission Viejo weight coach) response to quesiton about 47-00.5 Triple Jump and wind from this past Thursday's dual meet - the kind of stuff that escapes the simple reporting of results in black and white - can't you feel the excitement for that final event of the meet!!!

Bob Williams great photo catches the scene on the 47 foot jump!!!

Doug, There was no wind gauge, but it really wasn't breezy. Woolridge (TH) had just jumped 45'09 to take the lead after fouling his first 3 attempts. And Raphael McFarlane (MV) on his last attempt got all of the board and nailed the 47'00.50. The meet was on the line, all other events being completed, both sides of the TJ runway were packed with coaches & athletes. I was right there on the board, and witnessed both jumps. I don't believe they were wind aided. I think both of these guys are great jumpers, the adrenaline rush under the massive pressure of these two final attempts was enough to get them out there. Sorry about the long response, it was really an amazing effort by both athletes. Great competition!!!

Rapael does have another sport - and they do play some football at Mission Viejo!!! - he's a 6-2 165 pound wide receiver for the championship squad (in addition to triple jumping)!! ( 2 consecutive SS Divisional FB titles for the school!!)
