Hornet Invitational - Enterprise HS (Redding) - preview
Varsity Boys-
The top teams on paper are the defending section champs of Paradise. They
seem to be strong in almost every event with alot of returnees from last
season. They are paticulary strong in the hurdles with Zack Hall and a
very good supporting cast. Nathan Younie will help as well in the distances
and High jump. Pleasant Valley will be tough with its great distance crew
do damage and Enterprise will be in the thick of things with Frank and
Nichols leading a solid group there. In the events themselves, the 400
meters looks to be a showdown between last season's Northern Section champ
in Phillip Curiel of Liberty Christian with a 50.02 best this season and
Kenny Frank of Enterprise who has a relay split best this season of 50.
The 800 should be quite interesting with Frank, Curiel and teammate Tim
Nelson scheduled to run what may be the best race of the day.The sprints
are wide open with Curiel in the 200 and a host of others. Relays should
be close with Red Bluff the leader in the short one and Enterprise the
leader in the long. (on paper) In the field events it will be another
David Nichols and Craig Young meeting in the shot put with Nichols coming
in with a best of 57'10.5 and Young of Shasta coming in with a 53'0. The
discus is Nichols to lose as he leads a field by about 15 feet. The jumps
could be a Robert Kirvin sweep. Kirvin of Shasta has a TJ bes t of over
45' and a Long jump best of 20'7. Others to watch are Daniel Pride of
Willows, Brody Angley of Enterprise, Kenny Reeder of Enterprise and a
host all around the 19 to 20 foot marks. The high jump will be another
battle between Shane Bradley of West Valley at 6'6, Nathan Younie of Paradie
6'4 and David Hoff of Shasta 6'4. A new meet record may come our way in
a few events on Saturday
Varsity Girls-
The defending Northern section champs look very strong again. That is
Paradise, and they look to make a team sweep of the top spots. They will
be pushed by Enterprise, Pleasant Valley, Shasta and I am sure some surprises.
Leading the Bobcats of Paradise are the sisters Phares. Noelle and Natalie
will do lots of damage in the sprints and hurdles. They are helped along
by Lindsey Roberts in the distances and a strong group of throwers and
jumpers. On paper, they look very deep and could be looking at the team
title.
The sprints will be very interesting with McAvoy of Oroville in at 12.6
and 26.1, Phares of Paradise, Kragel of Pleasant Valley and a slew of
low 13's to make it exciting. The jumps will be an open field with Phares
and Lindsey Kirschman of Enterprise leading the way in the TJ at 35' and
the Long jump has Kirschman with a best of 16'2. There is a host of others
who could easily prevail in the jumps. In the throws it is a Shasta duo
leading the way. Claire Miller is the leader in the shot at 41'10 with
her teammate the leader in the discus. Gabie Spaulding is in with a 114+
throw. There is alot of bodies over 100' so that event may be interesting.
The distances are next and we may have some great runs for the North section.
In the 800m we have Enterprise frosh Lindsey Kirschman in with a 2:20,
Carolyn Menard in with a lifetime best of 2:19 and a fine distance crew
from Pleasant Valley entered in the mix. This being the first non relay
meet for the North section means some times are splits and we could see
alot more bodies in the running. Katie Moravec of PV, Leah Hansen and
Ashley Rinne of Shasta and Lindsey Roberts of Paradise make the 800 a
possbile fun race. In the 1600m it is a battle of Menard of Enterprise,
Janessa Hoppe of Enterprise, Moravec of PV, and a slew of others who will
do battle. Hoppe has the top time in the 3200 (defending section champ)
but will be hard pressed by the crew from Pleasant Valley. Chico is bringing
their distance group so I am quite sure they will enter into the mix as
well.
That is a quick preview of the Hornet (Enterprise, Redding) Invite.
