Drossin named Athlete of the Week - USATF 4/1/03

INDIANAPOLIS - Deena Drossin has been named USA Track & Field's
Athlete of the Week after winning her second consecutive silver medal
Saturday at the 31st IAAF World Cross Country Championships in Lausanne,
Switzerland.

Drossin turned in a time of 26 minutes, 2 seconds to lead Team
USA to a bronze medal in the senior women's long-course event. In 2002,
Drossin's runner-up showing at World Cross Country led Team USA to the
team silver. On April 13, she will compete in the Flora London
Marathon.

World-leading outdoor track and field performances by American
athletes last week include Shawn Crawford's time of 10.10 seconds in the
men's 100m Friday in Roodepoort, South Africa; Felicia Stone's 13.10 in
the women's 100m hurdles and Magdalena Lewy's 10,000-meter time of
32:41.76, both run on Saturday at the Stanford Invitational in Palo
Alto, Calif. In the field, Lacy Janson of Florida St. vaulted to
4.37m/14-4 Saturday at the Florida Relays in Gainesville, Fla.

Seventy-five-year-old Leonore McDaniels of Virginia Beach, Va.,
was the biggest record-setter at the 2003 USA Track & Field Masters
Indoor Championships over the weekend in Boston, breaking age-group
records in the pole vault (1.71m/5-7.5); high jump (1.12m/3-8) and
triple jump (6.47m/21-2.75).

Now in its third year, USATF's Athlete of the Week program is
designed to recognize outstanding performers at all levels of the sport.
USATF names a new honoree each week and features the athlete on the
USATF Web site. Selections are based on top performances and results
from the previous week.
