San Diego Budget Problems a harbinger of things to come for many areas statewide in budget crunch!

We had heard some rumors of serious cutbacks in the sport of track and field in the San Diego area due to some decisions by the huge San Diego school district, which we heard was especially wrestling with how to upgrade pole vault facilties for its huge number of schools. We did not realize the depth of the problem, with an unnamed school coach below describing a cutback in the number of meets due to problems even having tracks lined for meets. Certainly sounds as if the number of meets has been severly cut back from the "one per week" situation, with other budget difficulties indicated below. With Governor Davis appearing to have some real problems in attempting to creatively finance the state out of the serious shortfall that exists in the budget, we may be hearing more of the same from other areas. If you know or hear of any specifics please pass them on. We are comfortable with the "unnamed source" for a general situation as below.

"San Diego City Schools. First, the pole vault is only being contested by a few schools, since the district decided not to spend the money to upgrade the pits to meet the new requirements. In the Eastern and Harbor league, we have gone to tri-meets at San Deigo HS[all-weather] because 67 Gardeners were fired, and there are no ON-site gardeners to drag and mark the tracks. As such we have only 3 competitions in league instead of our usual 6. We're just trying to get through this year. We, at our school, also had a 50% cut in our budget for Equipment and supplies/uniforms. Some schools had it even worse, depending on how they decided to deal with a budget shortfall, NOT related to the State buget crisis for 2003-04."
