Jessica Pressley (Laguna Creek) Shot Put Star Talks about herself!!

Donna Dye photo

Another super starter this spring season has been Jessica Pressley (Laguna Creek, Elk Grove), who has impressed mightily with her early Shot Putting, that has her out near 50 feet at 49-08.5, the #10 All-Time California effort in the event. Interestingly, she still needs to improve to take down the School record, the 50-00.75 by Chaniqua Ross from 1998! Part of a super group of throwers back statewide this spring, she speaks to some impressive goals below, as well as offers some advice to newcomers to the weight event area.

Thanks Jessica - best of luck - Doug Speck - DyeStatCal

1) Briefly summarize your athletic successes of your last few hs seasons

Some of the successes that I have had in the few seasons are taking First team all Delta in volleyball. In track I won the league finals w/ a 47 2 1/2 foot throw. I went to state meet and took 4th place.

2) What other sports besides track and field have you taken part in?

The other sports that I have played were volleyball 8th grade thru 12th grade. I played basketball for about 6 years.

3) Great start to 2003 outdoor season with 47-07 and 135-09 efforts - "off the top of your head" reason for the great start to this year?

The reason for the great start to this season is because this is my last year and I wanted to go out with a bang! I also think it is because I started training earlier and I am a lot stronger. I plan on going into to every meet as if it was my last and trying to P.R every time I throw.

5) What do you think of the throwers across the state this year - seems like a special group - does it motivate you to do better?

Yes, the throwers across the state motivate me to do better because I want to keep up with them and throw as far as they do or even farther.

6) What are some goals for the spring season?

Some goals that I have this season are to win state meet and to break the National State record, which is right now at 53-07.75. In order to do so I have to work harder than ever and go all the way without stopping.

9) What would be some advice you could give to beginning throwers in the Shot Put and the Discus events?

I would tell them that it might look easy but its not and no matter what your only competition is your best mark. Work hard and never give up.
