Best of Luck John - We have the Arcadia winner's watch ready!! - Doug Speck - DyeStatCal.com

1) Summarize briefly your successes in Track the last few years?

1. 6 time league shot and discus champion. CIF qualifier since freshman year, CIF Finals 4th place in shot as Sophomore, CIF Finals 2nd place as Junior, Master Meet 4/6th place(I cant remember which), 6th place at CA. state meet as a Junior. Competed in the Junior Nationals in Palo Alto.

2) Any other sports you have been involved with along the way?

2. I have played football for all four years too. I am a three year varsity starter. Two-time All-League, and selected as San Gabriel Valley Scholar-athlete Hall of Fame.

3) Talk a little about your college choice?

3. I will be attending UCLA in the fall and I am very excited about it. The legacy and reputation that UCLA has as being a great track program and Throwing powerhouse is really exciting. I respect Coach Venegas and all of the other throwers tremendously. It will be nice to go somewhere where there are five other people that are just as good as you if not better and they will be pushing you to be better. The feeling that I got from coach Venegas and the other throwers made my decision easy. As soon as I heard from them that they wanted me to join the program I signed as soon as I could there was no questioning it. I would have done it even if there was no scholarship because this is the opportunity of a lifetime.

4) What are some of the things you are working on and emphasizing in the Shot Put for your senior outdoor season?

4. I will be working on some of the little problems that I have had trouble with in the past. My technique and footwork is pretty well tuned so I will focus on the minors. I will also be working on the mental aspect and learning to prepare mentally better before a meet and during it. I have also made huge gains in my lifting so I am feeling as strong as ever.

5) What are some of your goals later this winter and spring?

5. I would like to win the state championship and the Arcadia Invitational. I am hopefully going to attend the Golden West and I am planning on going to the Junior Nationals again.

6) What do you do with your spare time outside of sports and academics?

6. I like to spend time with my girlfriend and friends. My family is an important part of my life also.

7) What advice would you have to a beginning High School thrower?

7. In the beginning it is very awkward and confusing but it will come together eventually so you need to hang in there. It has taken me three years to develop my form to where it is today and there is still a lot that I can improve on. I think that persistence and the hope for achviement of a goal is very important. Start out with small goals and work your way up. Also it is very important to realize that you cant always compete with everyone else. If you are happy with the way you competed then you should be happy no matter what place you took.
