--2003 Bay Area Distance Festival Preview--Tony Kauke - City College of San Francisco

This year I decided to do something a little bit different with the meet preview. Listed below for each event is the top returning athlete from last year’s Distance Festival, all the other top entrants, and the meet record. I tried to include all of the top entrants personal best times. So if there are any errors with that I apologize in advance. Also included is someone to watch out for and a bit of a prediction on how things may shake out in each of the races. Enjoy!

Girls 1600m

Top Returner: Melissa Grelli (Presentation) 5:00.66
Grelli ran 5:01.3 at last year’s D-Fest to place 3rd. Melissa then went onto run 5:00.66 for 1600m and more impressively 10:36.68 for 3200m. She is a very tough competitor and will be tough to beat.

Other Top Entrants: Jenn Saura (Miramonte) 5:04.18
Ashleigh Montgomery (Carondelet) 5:08.54
Jehan Sparks (Piedmont) 5:11.56
April Dyer (Campolindo) 5:11.96
Corinne Roberts (Alameda) 5:12.2
Samantha Jones (Alhambra) 5:12.86

One to watch: Corinne Roberts (Alameda)
Roberts has a 5:12 solo effort to her credit in a scrimmage last week. Focusing on the 800m last year, Roberts hit 2:14.40 in the state meet trials. Roberts also ran a 5:06 DMR split last year. Word is Roberts has stepped up her training this winter. Look for her to be in the mix at the front of the race.

Meet Record: Shannon Rowbury (Sacred Heart) 4:56.2

The Skinny
Saura’s PR (5:04.18) is from two years ago, but if her fitness is near that level, she will be a factor. If last year’s race is any indication, Grelli may try to lead this race wire to wire. If anyone else can stay with her, they will likely score a personal best time.

Girls 800m

Top Returner: Jenn Saura (Miramonte) 2:15.92
Saura was 3rd here last year (2:20.7). Saura, a senior, is a veteran of big time races having been to the state track meet twice. Saura also has two NCS titles in cross-country to her credit.

Other Top Entrants: Ashley Vallis (Deer Valley) 2:14.29
Naomi Sparks (Piedmont) 2:20.84
Kelly Stewart (Castro Valley) 2:23.0
April Dyer (Campolindo) 2:24.0
Khariyyah Shabazz (James Logan) 2:24.1

One to watch: Ashley Vallis (Deer Valley)
Vallis showed some tremendous gears last year at NCS Finals. She is the top returning 800m runner in the North Coast Section. If Vallis was able to come out of soccer season healthy, watch out, she is a gutsy competitor.

Meet Record: Yfa Kretzschmar (University-SF) 2:13.5

The Skinny
With the winner from the last two D-Fest 800m paces (Kretzschmar) graduated, this race takes on a new look. Kretzschmar has always taken this race out hard, but without a proven front-runner in the field, look for this to be a more tactical race.

Girls 3200m

Top Returner: Michelle Gallagher (Sacred Heart) 10:53.91
Gallagher ran 11:02.1 to finish in 3rd place at last year’s D-Fest. Michelle has been a medallist at the state cross country meet and has even run at the World Junior Cross Country Championships for Ireland.

Other Top Entrants: Lindsey Allen (College Park) 10:55.75
Samantha Jones (Alhambra) 11:15.6
Jehan Sparks (Piedmont) 11:33.3
Corinne Roberts (Alameda) 11:38.1

One to watch: Lindsey Allen (College Park)
Allen has personal best times of 4:55.18 for 1600m and 10:55.75 for 3200m. Last year Lindsey raced to a 4th place finish at the state track meet.

Meet Record: Clara Horowitz (Head Royce) 10:42.8

The Skinny
Both Lindsey Allen (College Park) and Michelle Gallagher (Sacred Heart) are running this race fresh. Look for these two to push each other to a good early season time.

Boys 1600m

Top Returner: Taylor Graham (Moreau Catholic) 4:26.02
With Oscar Uribe opting to run only the 3200m (Uribe was 5th in 4:26.2 in last year’s D-Fest) Graham is the top returner at 4:28.7 (7th).

Other Top Entrants: Alex Enscoe (Berkeley) 4:20.79
Brandon Carballo (Moreau Catholic) 4:21.94
Lancer Smith (Freedom) 4:27.64
Yogi Reichert (Alameda) 4:27.66
John Yano (Castro Valley) 4:29.66
Nick Sears (Northgate) 4:29.70
Yosef Ghebray (James Logan) 4:31.92

One to watch: Yosef Ghebray (James Logan)
Ghebray, just a sophomore, turned some heads last spring when he ran 9:35.29 at NCS Finals. Anyone who missed him then couldn’t have this fall when he won NCS and ran to a 12th pace finish at the state meet (15:37).

Meet Record: Sean Drake (University-SF) 4:16.6

The Skinny
Last year’s top three finishers at the D-Fest went on to finish 1-2-3 in the section. With those three all graduated, the winner here will earn early season bragging rights in the North Coast Section.

Boys 800m

Top Returner: None
Last year’s winner Tim Wallach of Bishop O’Dowd is not entered in this year’s D-Fest and the next eight finishers were all seniors.

Top Entrants: Daniel Wold (Freedom) 1:58.50
Justin Tunberg (Amador Valley) 2:00.44
Misha Osipov (Sacred Heart) 2:01.52
John Rihel (San Ramon Valley) 2:01.84
Lancer Smith (Freedom) 2:02.21

One to watch: Lancer Smith (Freedom)
Smith has clocked some impressive early season times in local all-comers action. He has solid fitness and if he can recover from the 1600m should be a contender here as well.

Meet Record: Tim Wallach (Bishop O’Dowd) 1:56.2

The Skinny
Even though Daniel Wold (Freedom) has the best personal record time by almost 2 full seconds, it is early in the season and I would look for this to be a tight, close finishing race. If the fast finishing Alex Enscoe (Berkeley) doubles back from the 1600m (Enscoe is entered in the 1600m, 800m and 3200m), look for the fresh-legged guys to take this one out.

Boys 3200m

Top Returner: Miguel Uribe (Grace Davis) 9:22.50
Miguel finished in 2nd place last year (9:30.0) and looks to take top honors this year. .

Other Top Entrants: Jake Schmitt (Redwood) 9:33.97
Barry Fisher (Campolindo) 9:34.64
Joel Buscheck (Miramonte) * * 9:53.9
Alex Enscoe (Berkeley) 9:55.5

One to watch: Barry Fisher (Campolindo)
Fisher had a breakthrough cross country season last fall. At NCS Fisher was victorious narrowly defeated the defending champion (Schmitt from Redwood) and then finished 2nd at the state meet the following week.

Meet Record: Carl Dambkowski (Granada) 9:20.6

The Skinny
Expect Miquel Uribe and twin brother Oscar (a 4:22.80 1600m runner) to push from the gun. These two like to work together and are coming off very successful cross-country seasons. Schmitt and Fisher wont give anything away to these two and will certainly be in the lead pack.
