A Magical Night of Relay Racing - Where the Stars Come out to Shine

On Saturday, March 8, 2003, San Rafael High School will host the third
annual San Rafael Twilight Relays, a special and magical evening of track
relay racing. The Twilight Relays consists of eight relay races, run at
night, under the lights, on our beautiful all-weather track and field
facility. The first race starts at 5:30 pm.

This year, we have over 20 teams competing, including several Northern
California powerhouses, such as Berkeley, St. Ignatius College Prep, Maria
Carrillo, Montgomery, and University.

One of the largest high school sporting events in Marin history, with
intimate seating, stadium lights, automatic timing, a first class facility,
sponsor booths (including Fleet Feet), and spirited team relay racing
efforts, this year's event will be an exciting and memorable experience for
track and field athletes and fans of all ages.

The running events begin at 5:30 pm and the cost is $5.00 to attend. This
meet serves as a fundraiser for the athletes of the San Rafael and Terra
Linda High Schools track & field programs. All event proceeds go towards
the purchase of much needed track & field equipment and expenses. A very
special thank you to our generous sponsors, including Fleet Feet, the
Tamalpa Runners, Extreme Pizza, and Ghiloti Brothers.

The following is a preview of the relay running events.

Girls Sprint Medley Relay (100m-100m-200m-400)
Over thirty relay teams have signed up for this race, making a total of four
heats. Teams expected to contend for swiftest honors are Casa Grande, Maria
Carrillo, Amador Valley, and Novato. All these teams come in with estimated
times within 3 seconds of each other, so it will be a real close one at the
line. Look for a winning time around 1:50.

Boys Sprint Medley Relay (100m-100m-200m-400)
This race is packed with talent and very fast teams. Another popular relay
race, with nearly 40 teams and five heats, look for the individual winner to
come out of one of the two fast heats. Castlemont, Amador Valley, Maria
Carrillo, and Tamalpais all have a full cadre of great sprinters and the
race will likely come down to the final 10 to 50 meters of the 400 meters
anchor leg. Times should be in the mid 1:30 range.

Girls Medley Relay (1200m-400m-800m-1600)
This will surely be one of the more exciting races of the night as many of
the top Northern California distance programs will be competing for bragging
rights. Look for a battle between St. Ignatius, Maria Carrillo, and Alameda
on the final 1600 meter leg with times in the low to mid 12 minute range and
several others close to the 13 minute mark.

Boys Medley Relay (1200m-400m-800m-1600)
This race will also be thrilling to watch with ten teams having estimated
finish times within 10 seconds of each other. The top squads in the hunt
for a coveted Twilight Relays medal (for the top three teams) include St.
Ignatius, Alameda, Cardinal Newman, Maria Carrillo, and Berkeley. Expect a
lot of lead changes and inner battles during the longer relay legs and very
exciting relay hand offs and exchanges. Several teams will vie for a shot
of dipping under 11 minutes.

Middle School 4x200 Meter Relay
In the middle of the meet, we have a middle school race to get our younger
athletes involved and excited about our great sport. We have a few teams
competing from around the Bay Area.

Coed 4 x 200 Meter Relay (girl-girl-boy-boy)
The two coed relay races finish off the night and really bring together a
great spirit of team camaraderie with girls and boys working together and
cheering each other on. At this point in the night, the feeling is going to
be electric with nearly 40 teams and 5 heats and most runners running their
second event of the night and really ready to put it all on the line. It
will likely be a very tight finish with good handoffs making a huge
difference. Casa Grande, Amador Valley, Maria Carrillo, and Alameda will
battle for king and queen sprint honors. Winning marks will likely be in
the 1:40 or under range.

Coed 4 x 800 Meter Relay (girl-girl-boy-boy)
The last event of the evening will likely have all the spectators standing
as many of the top 800 meter runners in Northern California take to the
track. The favorites for team honors in this one include St. Ignatius,
Maria Carrillo, Cardinal Newman/Ursuline, and Amador Valley. Several teams
have a shot to break the 9:00 minute barrier.

A Magical Experience for All
Swift and talented runners aside, this event caters to track and field
athletes of all shapes, sizes, and abilities, providing a festival like
atmosphere and experience that is sure to leave an indelible memory.
