Shannon Rowby at last year's State Meet, where she took the 1600 (Donna
Dye photo) - Since that time Shannon has improved mightily, with a listing
of #10 on the current NCAA Div I Mile list (4:42.65 adjusted for a flat
track to 4:41.85), with also a listing off a fine 3000m run this winter
season. Below the former Golden State Star talks about the mile race,
her general running so far at the collegiate level, academics, basketball
in the basketball-crazy ACC, and offers some good advice to beginning
runners.
Best of Luck Shannon - sure we will hear more great things from you
Doug Speck - DyeStatCal
1) Reactions to the 4:42 Mile - what did you expect in the Conference
Meet?
I was so happy with my time. I had run some pretty good miles in DMR’s
(a 4:46 and a 4:44), but open I had only run a 4:50. I was really excited
for ACC’s, and also a little nervous, because I knew that if I wanted
to run a qualifying time for NCAA’s that it would be my only chance
to do it. I really didn’t know what to expect, but I felt like I
was ready to run fast. As I came down the final stretch, I was counting
in my head, trying to get in under 4:43. The first thing I did after I
was done was ask my coach what my time was. When he told me I had qualified
for National’s I was ecstatic.
2) Tell us about some of your other winter indoor season highlights?
The entire indoor experience has been awesome. Before college I had only
ever run 2 indoor races (in both of them I learned after the fact that
the strategy I had used was entirely wrong), so needless to say I approached
indoors a little hesitantly. In terms of actual races, I had a really
good season opener in the 3k. I had taken it easy for a little bit at
the beginning of the season because my knee had been bothering me, so
I was a little nervous going into my first race. Fortunately things went
really well, and I ended up running a 9:33 (which was a 5 second PR for
me).
3) How has it been with a full winter indoor season compared to high
school out here?
I miss California weather, a lot! San Francisco seems to have a nice,
constant foggy temperature year round, so you get used to the weather
and it is no big deal. It has been very interesting adjusting to the seasons
here, especially because this year North Carolina has managed to have
the hottest summer, the wettest fall, and the coldest winter. Basically
what I am trying to say is that I am a weather wimp, but oh well. (People
in the Northeastern snow are probably laughing/scoffing at me right now).
It has also been odd simply because I am not used to doing any hard workouts
until February or competing until March. It seems so strange running fast
early, but it is also is exciting.
4) How has training been different this year than in past seasons for
you?
The only main difference is that I have been much more consistent in my
training during the off season. In the past I never really followed a
set schedule during the summer or winter, so it would take me awhile to
get into shape once the season started. I have found that now, being surrounded
by motivated/focused people, I have been much more excited about running.
5) How did Fall Cross-Country go? (happy - not satisfied - ??)
I had mixed feelings about Cross-Country. It was hard adjusting to college
life in general, so having the added stress of competition and finding
my place in a new team made life difficult at times. I ran pretty well,
but college Cross-Country races are very overwhelming at first because
there are just so many amazing people out there with you at the same time.
6) How are the academics? - Major chosen? - How tough compared to high
school?
The hardest part about college academics is actually being able to focus
on work. There are always so many things going on that it is often difficult
to make the less desirable decision to actually do work. You have to get
on a schedule (with multiple study breaks worked in) because otherwise
the days fly by and the work just never gets done. So far, I think I want
to be an English Major, with a Theater Minor, because they don’t
have a communications program here but I would love to someday have a
career in News Broadcasting, or something of that sort. Of course, being
the typical college student that I am, I would not be surprised if my
mind were to change.
7) How big is basketball at Duke?
Well, let’s just say BIG! Even in the miserable weather that we
have been having of late, the Cameron Crazies were still out in hoards
tenting and waiting in line to get into the games. (I don’t think
they ever sleep.) Because of running I don’t really get to the games
very much, but if I want to know what happened there are always tons of
people willing to give me their input.
8) How are sports and athletes looked at within the Duke Community -
is being part of a sports team something special in the eyes of the locals?
(different than in California?)
Basketball is definitely looked upon with a very loving eye. Other than
that, athletes don’t really get that much special treatment, at
least not compared to the UC schools.
9) What are some goals in the near future (going to NCAA Indoors? - Outdoors
how does it look)?
For now I am just focusing on the end of indoors, which is amazingly going
to be here very soon. We are going to run our DMR again to try to get
an auto time for Nationals (we ran an 11:20 at the Armory and we were
one second off). I am planning to run the mile in Fayetteville, but I
would love to have some company. I don’t know what to expect in
the mile, but more than anything I am so excited to just get the National
experience because it will be so helpful down the line.
10) Any advice for seniors looking to the college choice decision about
now from what you learned?
When you look at a school, be honest with yourself. Don’t just pick
it because it is the popular choice, but actually go and visit and talk
to people. For me, the most important factor was the team and the coaches,
because those are the people that you are with for a huge majority of
the time. Make sure that the team environment feels like something you
would be able to mesh with (of course don’t be too biased though
because you are also likely to change yourself). Above all, when you make
your decision, just be confident about it!
11) Any advice to beginning prep distance runners as they are about to
start their careers in the sport?
Don’t feel like you have to do everything all at once. Let the
sport grow on you, as I’m sure it will. Rather than constantly comparing
yourself to others, just figure out what you need to work on, and focus
on that. Take it easy with things such as mileage at first, and always
listen to your body. Above all though, have fun, because that’s
what you’re doing it for, right!
Hope all is well,
Shannon
