Weight events at USC - good start to the meet, with Arizonan Thomas Navarro out over 60 feet in the Shot put. Billie Jo Grant (Unat/Arroyo Grande) opened up in practice with a 175 footer on a calm, cool day, and then was out to 169-09, with Washington transfer, now at San Clemente HS, Katie Hutchinson was second a 154-02, and Melissa Faubus (Unat/Centennial HS, Bakersfield) over 152 for the best throwing ever this early in the year at this meet as a group!! - Link to Jeff Venglass Weight event photos

Girls 4x160 Heat winners - 1) Inglewood St. Mary's 1:18.9, Heat 2) Diamond Ranch 1:19.4, Heat 3 Paramount 1:18.3, Heat 4) Birmingham (VN) 1:17.6, Heat 5) Serra (Gardena) 1:20.3

4x880 Boys - Race One - Barstow 8:40.8 (official time) over Villa Park 8:45.1 and Peninsula 8:45.3. (Race Two) - Downey 8:25.0 (official time) winner over Moorpark 8:32.3 (Race Three) - Murrieta Valley winners 8:14.0 (official time) over Esperanza 8:18.9 and El Toro 8:34.0.

Boys 500 Yard Races Times unofficial - (Heat 1) - good contest between John Reamer (Serra) and an added entrant, John Swift (Upland) who edged ahead at the tape (heat 2) Dionte Brown (Serra, Gardena) and Roy Benjamin (Helix, La Mesa) broke on top, with Brown holding the lead until the last half-lap, when Brian Walsh of Redlands zoomed by to the win at 62.3. (Heat 3) the quality improves a bit through the heats - Randy Jones (Uni City, SD) early leader with Rodney Crosby (Cleveland, Reseda) second - Marcell Keeling, who we understand is a nephew of former great 800 star, Percell, was the winner at 60.9, moving away!! (Heat 4) Tall Andrew Dawson (Vallejo) looked very good in moving to fine 60.5 win (Heat 5) Good race with Reggie Johnson (Diamond Ranch) holding off Chad Monreall (Cimarron, Las Vegas) right at the tape (62.3) (Heat 6) good group here - sub 49 types - Mike Pratt of LA Taft broke on top, with DeSean Cunningham next - Malik Mohammed (LB Poly) edged up, but Pratt held his lead around the turns. Cunningham big rush over last half lap to win in fine 59.4. Since this is the only meet in the nation that runs this event it is a new national leader!! (Heat 7) - Paul Pratt led over Deun White with White stopping with one lap to go. Pratt appeared the winner, with Jeff Jacobs mounting a super charge over the final half lap to end up the winner at 60.6

Girls 500 Yards (Heat 1) - Sharada Maddox (Brentwood) led the entire way. - (Heat 2 - Eryn Mack (Santa Monica) raced away from the pack to a huge win at 70.5. (Heat 3) - Appeared they have combined races so we do not know the athletes in this event, and it turned out that it was Shakara Lott the winner.

Girls LJ - Lena Bettis (North, Riverside) was the winner over her teammate Gayle Hunter 18-02.75 to 17-09.25.

Rated Mile - (Heat One) - Joel Cota early leader over good sized field - tall smooth strider - he led through 440 at under 64 seconds. Danny Luna (Paramount) moved up to challenge there to keep the pace going, with David Torrence (Loyola) in third. Scott Breithaupt (Murrieta Valley) close, with Cota pressing pace up through 880 (arrived at in 2:12). At that point Cota had a 20 yard lead over David Torrence. Cota looked very strong and impressive through his 4:29.4 finish.

Race Two - David Napper (Cypress) out early, with Nevadan Chris Concho taking over after a 62.9 440 - Concho lead by a bit at 2:10 at the 880, with Mark Matusak (Loyola) working his way up by the 1320. It was a two-person race at the 1320, with Concho ahead and Matusak working up to his shoulder - just under 3:21 at the 1320 and a good race. Matusak very strong final 440 to win just over 4:26.

Girls Rated Mile (Race One) - Kelly Deane (San Lorenzo Valley) and Erica Sahli (Villa Park) leaders through a 78 first 440. Sahli continued to edge away through a 2:41 880. Sahli had it up to about 35 meters by the 1320 mark with her teammate Jordan McCarthy second at the 1320. Sahli was 4:04 at the 1320. Sahli continued into the tape an easy winner at 5:24.9.

Girls Mile (Rated Race Two) - Unidentified athlete - believe she is Grace Murillo (Manual Arts) was out very quick, at under 70 seconds for the first 440, with nearly a half a lap lead during the first 880. By the 880 she had her huge lead maintained through a 2:30 split. Jessie Ooms (University City, SD) edged closer to the 1320 at 4:01. Ooms had now creeped to within four seconds and had momentum. With a lap and a half to go Ooms zoomed by and raced away to a fine 5:21.3 win.

Boys 880 (Race One) - Alex Caudana (Santa Margarita) made it simple, racing by the 440 at 62, then continuing to pull away to a 2:04.8 win.

(Race Two) - Nemo Simmons (Diamond Ranch) out quickly, and led the first two laps - Neal Washburn of Cypress moved up and ahead by the 440 at 60. Javier Diaz (Sweetwater) came up to challenge, but Simmons fought him off during a spirited last lap struggle with 2:04.3 the unofficial time.
