Devers named Athlete of the Week - ex-Sweetwater HS (Nat'l City)/UCLA

INDIANAPOLIS - Gail Devers has been named USA Track & Field's
Athlete of the Week following her American record-breaking performance
in the 60 meter hurdles Friday at the 96th Verizon Millrose Games.

Devers ran 7.78 seconds to break Jackie Joyner-Kersee's previous
American record of 7.81, set in 1989. Her world-leading performance in
the 60 meters earned her the 2003 Fred Schmertz Outstanding Performer
Trophy at the Verizon Millrose Games.

Other impressive performers from last week included Olympic pole
vault gold medalist Stacy Dragila, who broke her own, six-day old
American record in the Visa women's pole vault at Millrose, clearing
4.72 meters/15 feet, 5.75 inches. The mark improved on her record of
4.71/15-5.5 set February 1 at the first stop on the 2003 Golden Spike
Tour, the adidas Boston Indoor Games.

Coby Miller turned in a world-leading performance in the men's
60m dash with a time of 6.49 Sunday at the Flanders Indoor Energizer
meet in Ghent, Belgium.

Ryan Shay of Team USA California won the 79th U.S. Men's
Marathon Championship Saturday in Birmingham, Ala. The 23-year-old
Michigan native finished in 2 hours 14 minutes and 29 seconds to claim a
$12,000 prize purse to win his first U.S. Championship.

Now in its third year, USATF's Athlete of the Week program is
designed to recognize outstanding performers at all levels of the sport.
USATF names a new honoree each week and features the athlete on the
USATF Web site. Selections are based on top performances and results
from the previous week.

2003 USATF Athlete of the Week Winners: January 7, J-Mee Samuels;
January 14, Kevin Toth; January 21, Michelle Collins; January 28,
Natasha Hastings; February 4, Regina Jacobs; February 11, Gail Devers.
