Arizona Champ Tomas Navarro (60-05.5) will challenge 60-footer and UCLA signee John Caufield and most of California’s other best throwers. Gabe Long was 58-07.5 last spring, with football star Jared Bray close behind at 58-06.5. Chris White was 55-05 out of the Central Section, with Brian Hicks (54-10.75) second in the CCS last spring.

Jared Bray shows up here, in addition to the Shot Put, with a 174-00 best. Arizona's Navarro was 176-03 last year.

–Andrew Little impressed with a 15-04 clearance at January’s Pole Vault Summit in Reno, Nevada, with the Golden State’s fortunes in the event taking a step up there when five cleared 14-10 or better! Hong Nguyen (15-06) and Brandon Mora (15-04) lead out of the great Katella HS program, with Zack Miller (15-04) from Rancho Bernardo. Graham Bockmiller and Dan Appanatis have gone 14-10.

–Let’s see. A healthy Loyola HS team, State CC Champs, would be tough to handle, but in this event anything is possible. Coaches, afterwards, ask your athletes how many could tell exactly where they were in the race at all times–remember this be a five and a half lap 880 leg, tough for anyone to keep track of with folks speeding and slowing, teams lapped, and baton passes coming up at strange times. Event famous for being a lap short or long.

–Interesting group - Cowan a UCLA bound Footballer was 48.17 and 38.07 on the way to placing in the State Meet intermidiates and adding a sub 47-second relay leg in that meet. Tall body, tight boards, should be interesting here! Khalil Jackson (48.61) and DeSean Cunningham (48.55) along with good 400-800 runner Malik Mhammed make this a top heat!!

–Deun White is one of the nation’s best at 47.63 for a 400. Hilbe has been close to 48.0 indoors for a 400 already this winter, and will be very, very tough! DeSa a 21.49-48.09 last year, is a UC Berkeley Football signee, who is an all-world receiver. Jeff Jacobs was second at state last year in the 400 at 47.97, so this one is loaded!!

–Mohammed Trafeh completed a super Fall Cross-Country season, and appears ready to roll into a super spring, with a 9:08.69 from the 2002 spring over 3200m. Ryan Morgan was 9:09.52 last year, with Manuel Ruiz 9:13.77. Juan Robles (9:19.60) and Tim Aukshunas (9:21.08) will help to make this a very solid contest!!! It is hoped that someone will take up the challenge of a good, steady pace!!

–three schools who always come to run in the relays battle here. Taft (Woodland Hills) will start the coaching career for famed star Quincy Watts (Olympic Gold Medalist who is the Taft school sprint record holder at an amazing 10.30 and 20.50!! Birmingham sprint coach Ketrick Carruth and Head Coach Scott King have another strong group, with this the first of many San Fernando Valley duels before the year is over in June! DaSean Cunningham (48.84) leads what could be a strong Uni City group!

–USC bound footballer Reggie Bush (10.42 100m 2002) will get used what will be the start of a great career across the street from the Sports Arena (and next door in the Coliseum trying to fill the running back shoes for graduated Trojan trackster stars Justin Fargas and Sultan McCullough). Noah Smith (10.53 and UC Berkeley bound as a wide-receiver) starts his senior year coached by Quincy Watts, the top sprinter ever to come out of the LA City, an Olympic Champ and Taft record holder at 10.30 and 20.50! Derrick Jones (10.58) had a super soph year and Coach Don Norford is very high on the Jackrabbit football star (look for him to be touted as one of the nation’s top receivers next Fall as a senior!). Lionel Larry (10.78-21.32) is another who had a super soph season in 2002, and along with Jones hopes to compete for the U.S. in the World “Under-18" Championships in Canada next summer off their 2002 Summer JO succcesses. Matt Slater was the Southern Section Div III Champ last year at 10.77 for 100m, with Michael Matison out of San Diego 10.78 on the clock! This one will be a cooker!

–Last word had Mike Poe headed for Arkansas for a special mile there. Michael Haddan was the State 800 Champ last spring with 1:51.02 as just a soph there. Haddan had a good Fall Cross-Country season, and was 4:15.32 for that distance last spring, with fellow Orange County star Humberto Rojas 4:14.70 and at the state meet over 4 laps last June! Mohamed Trafeh was 4:14.36 and is doubling back here after a two mile. Billy Smith from Arizona was 4:17.60 last spring for 1600 meters, with Taylor Lucero (4:17.12), Matt Kern (4:17.36), Kyle Ivie (4:18.45), and Alex Dunn (4:18.45) making this a very strong race. Again, some middle of the event help with the pacing is hoped for!


EVENT 50
