EVENT SUMMARY: Utah's
Heide Houle (Mtn. View HS) came into her prelim with a goal of 5:15, but
a good mid-race groove and a rush of adrenaline led her into a harder-than-anticipated
effort she did not regret. "We're going for the 4x800 meet record
this weekend and my 1600 would be right after that, so I'd be too tired
to run a fast time at finals. I thought I heard footsteps behind me and
I wanted to win the heat, so I went with (the fast groove) at prelims
and I was stunned at my time." The team's 4x800 meet record is very
likely, but inside indications are that the group is really pointing to
the national 4x800 mark. Heidi Magill, a 2:06/800 phenom also on the group,
was been hampered by a hip problem off and on, but her father mentioned
this morning she is ready to go! ... California's Amanda Thornberry (Valley
Christian, San Jose) looked ultra-impressive in her heat victory, getting
out very quick, then settling in. "My strategy was to take it out
hard just to qualify," beamed Thornberry, a definite contender for
a World Youth Games spot. "I think it's well within reach,"
said Thornberry when asked of Alicia Craig's meet record (4:51.65 in 2000).
She covered the first 1500 in 4:51 here, before really turning off the
jets. "I ran today based on my strength, and I didn't push the last
two laps. But I'm in better shape than last year and more mature. Mature
physically, mentally - just more mature in so many ways."
