February 15th LA Indoor Features Super Prep Fields - Preview - Girls Field Events

LA Indoor Preview – Girls Field Events

The Following Preview Includes Athletes who had indicated that they would be competing by their coaches throgh late January. It is certainly not a final list, as "unattached" competitions such as this have a great deal of flexibility right up until the final minute.

Gayle Hunter (now at North, Riverside) and Billie Jo Grant (Arroyo Grande - John Dye photo) two field event headliners at the LA Indoor 2/15/03

ALL ATHLETES COMPETING UNATTACHED - SCHOOLS MENTIONED FOR PURPOSES OF IDENTIFICATION ONLY

High Jump
The North (Riverside) duo of Gayle Hunter (5-08) and Lena Bettis (5-07.75) are all over the place in the jumping events, with 5-06 jumpers Bethany Johansen (Mitty, San Jose), Lauren Collins (Santa Margarita, Rancho SM), and Topaz Marcos (Upland) headlining a good field that has a good number of 5-04 of better jumpers.

Pole Vault
Great group here, as always!! Kira Costa (San Joaquin Memorial, Fresno) is hot this winter already, with a 12-06 best from last spring in the event, where she is among the nation's top half dozen returnees, marking a third place finish in last year's state meet. Brittani Bernhard (West Covina), Whitney Johnson (Mission Viejo), and Elizabeth Woepse (Mater Dei, Santa Ana) mark themselves as among the nation's top twenty in this event with 12-00 personal bests, with the latter duo state finalists last June. Kirsten Lofton (Aptos), Janna Muscato (Green Valley, Henderson, NV), and Cara Walker (Marina, Huntington Beach) have bests of 11-06.

Long Jump
Another super crew competing here. State Champ Lena Bettis (North, Riverside) will keep busy this day, with a 19-10.75 from last spring's season, with teammate Gayle Hunter (North, Riv) 19-04.5 (20-00.5w) fourth at that competition last June. Michelle Sanford (Woodbridge, Irvine) is dedicating her senior year to jumping (formerly she was an accomplished winter basketball player), with a 20-08.75w (19-05.75 wind legal) best and third place effort at state. Angela Brazley (Etiwanda) has a 19-06 best, and was a State Finalist (8th), with Ciara McMillan (Wood, Vacaville) a fine summer 19-06.75w jump, and Kat Dawkins (St. Joseph, Lakewood) 19-00w last spring! Candyce Babb (Pomona) was 19-02.5, with the entire group above among the nation's top dozen returnees in the event in what could develop into one of the Golden State's best events this spring!

Triple Jump
Michelle Sanford (Woodbridge, Irvine) is stalking Juliana Yendork's State All-time bests. With a 43-04.5 all-time outdoor best that marks her #3 All-time among U.S. Preps, and a senior year uninterrupted by basketball during the winter as in the past, Sanford is looking at 43-11.5, the prep all-time indoor best by Yendork (1991 Walnut HS), and a 44-00.5 outdoor state all-time best by Juliana that is #2 on the all-time prep lists (Ychlindria Spears (Luling, Tex) Prep outdoor record holder at 44-02.25). Sanford's National Record 43-11.5 National Record, set in the Syracuse National Scholastic Indoor Meet in mid-March during her senior year, is incorrectly listed as the Meet Record here, and it would be interesting to figure out what really is the LA Indoor Meet Record to see how Michelle is doing early on. It is hoped the old LA Sports Arena Boards can rebound mightily one more time this season for Sanford and a good group here. Soph Brittany Daniels (Merrill West, Tracy) was an impressive 39-11.75 as the nation's top frosh athlete last year with a fine third place effort for her team in the State Meet. Artensia Young (transfer to Serra, Gardena we are informed) was 39-09w last year in the State Meet Prelims, and finished eighth in the Finals! Elizabeth Clayton (Newport Harbor, Newport Beach) 38-04.5w, Angela Brazley (Etiwanda) 38-02.5, soph Shanna Watson (International Studies, San Francisco) 38-01w, Ashlee Marshall (Stockdale, Bakersfield) 38-00.25, Sharrice Kelley (Bishop O'Dowd, Oakland) 37-10.75, and Errika Williams (St. Joseph, Lakewood) 37-07.75 fill out a good group!

Shot Put
A strong group will be over at USC at 10:30 a.m. for this event! Megan Howard (Arroyo Grande) is among the nation's top half dozen at 47-00 last year, with the junior the runner-up at the State Meet with her best effort! Bobbie Patton (Righetti, Santa Maria) 44-03.5 is among the top twenty returnees in the entire nation, with fellow area star Billie Jo Grant (Arroyo Grande) 43-11 for the year. Melissa Younghans (Lutheran, Orange) is back at 43-01.75, with Priscilla Gardner (Mission Viejo) 42-05.75, and Kristina Price (Merced) ouot to 41-07.75 last spring. (Melissa Faubus (Centennial, Bakersfield) 43-05.25 has been a late add to the SP)

Discus
Another group worth the trip to USC for their 9:00 a.m. start!! Billie Jo Grant (Arroyo Grande) is the nation's top thrower at 176-10, with fine experience at the World Junior Championship level last summer topping experiences picked up before she started her senior year. Grant returns as the State Champ. Kate Hutchinson (San Clemente via Pullman Washington last year) is among the nation's top half-dozen throwers back out over 160-05 from last spring, with a fine fourth place finish at the USATF Junior Nationals last June. Orange County rivals Priscilla Gardner (Mission Viejo - 148-05) and Katlyn Ciarelli (Huntington Beach 148-04) return as among the top fifteen in the entire nation heading into the 2003 season! Kristina Price (Merced) was a fine 143-07 in this event, with Whitney Deweese (Rancho Buena Vista, Vista) 141-09, Dryana Adams (Paso Robles 137-06), Kim Avila (Temescal Canyon, Elsinore) 134-10, and Vivan Ho (Webb, Claremont) 131-09 other good returnees for this spring!! (Melissa Faubus 164-00 (Centennial, Bakersfield) has been a late add to spice up the discus!)
