INDIANAPOLIS - Prep star Natasha Hastings has been named USA
Track & Field's Athlete of the Week following her record-breaking
performance in the 500 meters Saturday at the 9th Annual New Balance
Games.

The Brooklyn-born Hastings, a junior at New York City's
A. Philip Randolph High School, ran 1 minute, 11.84 seconds, at the
Armory Track & Field Center in New York, breaking the previous national
standard of 1:12.05 set by Tasha Downing in 1987. Hastings placed
fourth in the race behind Commonwealth Games 400m champion Aliann Pompey
(1:10.06), Olympic relay gold medalist Jearl Miles-Clark (1:11.24) and
third-place finisher Tiffany Barnes (1:11.77). Hastings also has the
nation's fastest prep time indoors this year at the 400 meters with her
time of 53.80.

Other impressive performances from last week included a
world-leading clearance by Olympic pole vault gold medalist Stacy
Dragila, who cleared 4.60 meters/15 feet, 1 inch in Boise, Idaho.
Another world-leading performance was turned in by Blake Russell, who
ran 4:37.73 in the women's mile in Boston.

World-leading performances by American men included
James Davis's 46.21 in the 400 meters at Lincoln, Neb., and Levar
Anderson's leap of 16.73m/54-10.75 in the triple jump at Baton Rouge,
La.

Now in its third year, USATF's Athlete of the Week program
is designed to recognize outstanding performers at all levels of the
sport. USATF names a new honoree each week and features the athlete on
the USATF Web site. Selections are based on top performances and results
from the previous week.
