LA Indoor Preview – Girls Running and Relay Events
The Following Preview Includes Athletes who had indicated that they would
be competing by their coaches throgh late January. It is certainly not
a final list, as "unattached" competitions such as this have
a great deal of flexibility right up until the final minute.
Murrieta Valley (led by Liza Pasciuto far right), competing Unattached
in LA Indoor, will be all over the place, with Ashlee Brown (Unat, North
HS, Riverside) one of the nation's top hurdlers also entered!!
ALL ATHLETES COMPETING UNATTACHED – SCHOOLS LISTED FOR PURPOSES
OF IDENTIFICATION ONLY
50 Meter Dash
Very good group of sprinters will battle here. Carol Rodriguez (Western,
Anaheim) (11.79 100M) was the SS Div III 100m Champ last year and running
strongly this winter. Deanna Goodwin (Int’l Studies, San Francisco
11.88 100m) is the best from her section, with Alicia Lowery (Morse, SD
– 12.04 100m) one of San Diego’s top dashers! Soph Janice
Nsor (Kennedy, La Palma 12.04) had a super frosh 2002 season, with Nicole
McClendon (Alemany, Mission Hills 12.09) much stronger heading for her
senior year. Vonnie Fulford (Birmingham, Van Nuys 12.09), Junior Rashauna
Amos (Southwest, El Centro – 12.11), soph Jeanne Newman (Moorpark
– 12.11w), Patrice White (Miller, Fontana 12.16), Jennifer Nash
(Merrill West, Tracy – 12.17w), Whitney Graham (Gahr, Cerritos 12.19w),
Danielle Eichelberger (Western, Anaheim 12.22w), and Taryn Jones (Helix,

Cinya Burton (Holy Names, Oakland) 24.84 (200m) will step down the 50
meter distance here.
500 Yard Dash (400 meter track bests listed)
Ashley Freeman, (LB Wilson), ranked #2 nationally over 500 meters this
winter and looking very strong, returns as the State’s best 400
meter runner at 53.71. She could challenge the all-time list with her
run in this event at the LA Indoor. The National Record is 1:04.0 by Chewuakii
(Choo-Choo) Knighten (Locke, LA) from 1985. The 1:04.0 is a very good
record, with one having to come by the 440 at under 57 seconds on the
tough 160 yard track to challenge. If Freeman comes to run it could be
interesting for the Stanford bound Wilson star. Soph Shelese Ruffin (Beaumont
55.10) had a great first year of prep running last spring. Shakara Lott
(University City, SD 55.38) is the best from San Diego, with Mackenzie
Hill (Wilson, LB) 55.50 another great from Coach Terry Kennedy’s
Wilson group. Soph Nicole Stone (Rancho Cucamonga 55.86) leads the State’s
most improved team into the 2003 season. Emily Kalmbach (Santa Margarita,
Rancho SM) 56.47, Dominique Carter (Merrill West, Tracy 56.61), Simone
Hibbert (Cleveland, Reseda 56.77), Lili Calhoun (North, Riverside 57.00),
and Eryn Mack (Santa Monica – 56.9) are others strong over the one
lap track distance.
880 Yards (800m times listed)
Ashley Freeman (Wilson, LB) 2:11.3 will battle with Treani Swain (Oakwood
Academy, North Hollywood – 54.79 400 in 2002) here if Ashley decides
to race both the 500 and the 880. A good group will be along. Whitney
Hampton (El Toro 2:12.36) had a fine frosh 2002 season, with Alexis Bartschi
(Merrill West, Tracy 2:12.52) hoping to put it together her senior year!
Carolyn Brown (Burroughs, Burbank 2:13.99), Kristin Kovacich (Mater Dei,
Santa Ana 2:14.23), Mary Maleta (Soquel 2:14.82), and Danielle Schuster
(Torrey Pines, Encinitas 2:15.89) will make it a fast race!

Az 4:59.60) all returning with 2002 1600 meter bests of under 5:00. Casey
Nevitt (Aptos – 10:36.84) is one the nation’s top 3200 runners
stepping down the eleven lap indoor Mile distance here.
2 Mile (3200m times listed)
Bethany Nickless (Fountain Valley 10:44.50) heads for her final prep season
in good shape, with Liza Pasciuto (Murrieta Valley 10:49.55) a possible
doubler in this meet. Junior Katie Gose (La Reina, Thousand Oaks 10:51.12)
is among the nation’s top 50 for the outdoor 8 lap distance, with
Lindsay Flaks (Harvard-Westlake, North Hollywood 10:53.43) another super
smaller schools runner. Arizona sister combo, Emily (10:45.71) and Valerie
(10:58.70) McGregor, will add to the mix here. Soph Anne Gustafson (Brea
Olinda 11:02.96) leads a strong supporting group with bests of just over
11 minutes for 3200 meters.
50 Meter Hurdles (100 Meter Hurdle times listed)
It will be North of Riverside and Wilson of Long Beach, both with the
potential for a flock of hurdling flyers this year, battling here. Ashlee
Brown (North HS State 300m Low Hurdles Champ and the nation’s best
there, is 14.06 for the 100 meter hurdles outdoors), with Mackenzie Hill
(Wilson, LB) 14.08 for that distance last spring. Gayle Hunter (North
14.46) and Diane Gooden (Wilson 14.48) are close behind, with Brittnie
Johansson (Diamond Ranch, Pomona 14.61), Christian Burrell (Santa Monica
14.89), and Tiffany Wright (Wilson, LB) 14.98 others of fine quality back
from 2002. Ashlee Lodree (El Cerrito), a World Youth Championship team
member for the U.S. from 2001, where she had 14.04 hurdle and 19-07.5w
LJ bests before 2002 injuries, is entered, and it would be great to see
the talented Bay area star out on the track healthy!!
Relays – you have them all here!! 4x160, 8x160, 4x440, 4x880!!
4x160 – Wilson (Long Beach) looks ready to roll, with a showdown
with LB Poly, Birmingham (Van Nuys), Merrill West (Tracy), and Western
(Anaheim) could make up some great action—nothing like those sprint
relay passes early in the year!
8x160 – LB Wilson and LB Poly – what more can you say!
4x440 – Early on, Birmingham (Van Nuys), Merrill West (Tracy),
Western (Anaheim), Santa Margarita (Rancho SM), and University City (SD)
look like the favorites.
4x880 – Canyon (Canyon Country), Murrieta Valley, Villa Park, Fountain
Valley, Torrey Pines (Encinitas), Ventura, Peninsula (Palos Verdes), Woodbridge
(Irvine), ande Harvard-Westlake (North Hollywood) look strong on paper
